The L-histidine-mediated enhancement of hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity is a general response in cultured mammalian cell lines and is always associated with the formation of DNA double strand breaks FEBS Letters 353 (1994) AIrstract Micromolar concentrations of L-hi&line increase the cytotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide in a number of cell lines including CHO (hamster), EAHY, McCoy's, U937 and CCRF-CEM (human), Vero (monkey) and SC-l (mouse). Importantly, these cell lines displayed different degrees of sensitivity to H,Oz alone and the extent of enhancement elicited by the amino acid was more pronounced in resistant cell lines. The increased cytotoxicity was invariably associated with the formation of DNA DSBs and a remarkable correlation was found by plotting the level of DNA DSBs against the cytotoxic response. These results strongly support the hypothesis that the mechanism whereby L-histidine increases the toxicity elicited by H202 involves the formation of DNA DSBs and are consistent with the possibility that the amino acid might participate in the regulation of the physio-pathological response to oxidative stress in mammals.

Digital media applications (DMAs) have emerged in abundance over the last ten years. Enabled by exponential growth in computing power and inexpensive data storage, these applications are easy to use and inexpensive (often free) to own. DMAs not only allow users to produce digital content efficiently they allow users to exploit the connective power of the Internet to distribute their work. These affordances are allowing users to connect with others in significant ways enabling entirely new ecosystems built around collaborative learning and discovery. The purpose of this article is to build a linkage between the interactivity of digital media applications and an ecological model of learning that is also built on the concept of interactivity. The ecological model postulates that the learner interacting with the environmental conditions is important to learning. The paper describes the ecological model of learning and how the "subsystems" of the model can serve as an evaluation rubric for DMAs. The authors conclude that developers of DMAs are creating environmental conditions conducive to learning based on ecology. Based on this analysis they provide several recommendations for selecting applications for learning and for strengthening these learning environments.

Analysis on Product Quality of Semi Refined Carrageenan using Six Sigma and Cost of Poor Quality

The study aimed to minimize defective products to improve the production process quality of PT BI by identifying the most types of defects, calculating Defect per Million Opportunities (DPMO) value, suggesting the quality improvement of the Semi Refined Carrageenan (SRC) production process, and calculating Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) value. The methods used in this research were Six Sigma and the COPQ. The priority improvement based on the Pareto chart was moisture defects with the percentage of damage of 36.9%. The Sigma level of the production process of PT BI was 3.42 with a defect rate of 27,429 DPMO. The analysis on the cause and effect diagram showed that factors affected the occurrence of defective products were error in reading on moisture content, diverse raw material, the wrong method of mixing raw materials prior to production process, and the lack of inspectors of production process. The most influential-dominant factor was the obsolete machine which causes error in reading on moisture content. The company can take preventive and corrective actions to suppress defective products and improve product quality. Based on the calculation of the COPQ, the costs that must be incurred by the company due to defective products was IDR 1,007,690,694.
