The batch-operated bromate/phosphate/acetone/dual catalyst system was studied at four temperatures between 5 and 35 degrees C. The dynamics was simultaneously followed by potential measurements with platinum and bromide selective electrodes, and spectroscopically at two different wavelengths. By simultaneously recording these four time series it was possible to characterize the dynamics of the sequential oscillations that evolve in time. The existence of three sequential oscillatory patterns at each temperature allowed estimating the activation energies in each case. Along with the activation energy of the induction period, it was possible to trace the time evolution of the overall activation energy at four different stages as the reaction proceeds. The study was carried out for two different sets of initial concentrations and it was observed that the overall activation energy increases as reactants turn into products. This finding was propounded as a result of the decrease in the driving force, or the system's affinity, of the catalytic oxidative bromination of acetone with acidic bromate, as the closed system evolves toward the thermodynamic equilibrium.
In this paper, we present results of our research on developing of new deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-based conducting membranes for application in electrochromic devices. Improvements of performances of DNA-based solid bioelectrolyte in smart windows were achieved by adding plasticizer like glycerol and different amounts of photosensitive chromophores, such as Nile Blue. The results were obtained and analyzed by a variety of experimental tools and techniques such as FT-IR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, fluorescence, electric conductivity, contact angle, charge density measurements, and cyclic voltammetry. The biomembranes with the highest ionic conductivity values were successfully applied in smart windows with glass/ITO/WO 3 /DNA-based membranes/CeO 2 -TiO 2 /ITO/glass configuration which have shown a good change of transmittance under the applied electric field. The obtained results suggest that DNA-based electrolytes are very promising materials to be applied in electrochromic devices.

New chemical systems have been recently designed for the study of complex phenomena such as oscillatory dynamics in the temporal domain and spatiotemporal pattern formation. Systems derived from oscillators based on the chemistry of bromate are the most extensively studied, with the celebrated Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction being the most popular example. Problems such as the formation of bubbles (CO 2 ) and solid precipitate in the course of the reaction and the occurrence of simply short-lived oscillations under batch conditions are very common and, in some cases, compromise the use of some of these systems. It is investigated in this paper the dynamic behavior of the bromate/hypophosphite/acetone/dual catalyst system, which has been sugested as an interesting alternative to circumvent those inconvenients. In this work, manganese and ferroin are employed as catalysts and the complete system (BrO 3 -/H 2 PO 2 -/acetone/Mn(II)-ferroin) is studied under batch conditions. Temporal symmetry breaking was studied in a reactor under agitation by means of simultaneous records of the potential changes of platinum and Ag/AgBr electrodes, both measured versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, spatio-temporal formation of target patterns and spiral waves were obtained when the oscillating mixture was placed in a quasi two-dimensional reactor. Keywords: oscillations; chemical kinetics; pattern formation.

We present in this work the influence of temperature on the dynamics of homogeneous chemical systems containing bromate and 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD) in acidic media. In particular, the following systems were studied: bromate/1,4-CHD/acid, bromate/1,4-CHD/ferroin/acid and bromate/1,4-CHD/trisbipyridine ruthenium/acid. Investigations were carried out by means of an electrochemical probe, at five temperatures between 5 and 45 °C. Activation energies (E a ) were estimated in different ways for the pre-oscillatory and oscillatory regimes. In any case, the E a was found to depend on the catalyst, composition and initial concentrations. In addition, it was observed that ferroin and trisbipyridine ruthenium act as catalysts only during the transition between the induction period and oscillatory regime. Keywords: oscillations; complex kinetics; 1,4-cyclohexanedione.
