Our study proposes that vitamin E is an effective anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and may be a promising therapeutic option for ulcerative colitis.

Increased deposition of the extracellular matrix components, particularly collagen, is a central phenomenon in liver fibrosis. Stellate cells, the central mediators in the pathogenesis of fibrosis are activated by free radicals, and synthesize collagen. Melatonin is a potent physiological scavenger of hydroxyl radicals. Melatonin has also been shown to be involved in the inhibitory regulation of collagen content in tissues. At present, no effective treatment of liver fibrosis is available for clinical use. We aimed to test the effects of melatonin on dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Wistar albino rats were injected with DMN intraperitoneally. Following a single dose of 40 mg/kg DMN, either saline (DMN) or 100 mg/kg daily melatonin was administered for 14 days. In other rats, physiologic saline or melatonin were injected for 14 days, following a single injection of saline as control. Hepatic fibrotic changes were evaluated biochemically by measuring tissue hydroxyproline levels and histopathogical examination. Malondialdehyde (MDA), an end product of lipid peroxidation, and glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were evaluated in blood and tissue homogenates. DMN caused hepatic fibrotic changes, whereas melatonin suppressed these changes in five of 14 rats (P < 0.05). DMN administration resulted in increased hydroxyproline and MDA levels, and decreased GSH and SOD levels, whereas melatonin reversed these effects. When melatonin was administered alone, no significant changes in biochemical parameters were noted. In conclusion, the present study suggests that melatonin functions as a potent fibrosuppressant and antioxidant, and may be a therapeutic choice.

High free radical production, low antioxidant capacity and excessive inflammation are well known features in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a powerful antioxidant and a scavenger of hydroxyl radicals. Recently, NAC has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities in tissues. Our study objective was to investigate the effects of NAC on tissue inflammatory activities using an ulcerative colitis model induced by acetic acid (AA) in rats. Wistar rats (n = 32) were divided into four groups. AA-induced colitis was performed in two of the groups while the other two groups were injected with saline intrarectally. One of the AA-induced colitis groups and one of the control groups were administered NAC (500 mg/kg/day) intrarectally, and the other control groups were given saline. After 4 days, colonic changes were evaluated biochemically by measuring proinflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6], myeloperoxidase (MPO), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in tissue homogenates and by histopathological examination. AA caused colonic mucosal injury, whereas NAC administration suppressed these changes in the AA-induced colitis group (p < 0.001). AA-administration resulted in increased TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MPO and MDA levels, and decreased GSH and SOD levels, whereas NAC reversed these effects (all p < 0.001). In conclusion, the present study proposes that intrarectal NAC therapy has a dual action as an effective anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, and may be a promising therapeutic option for ulcerative colitis.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the worldwide. This infection is often insidious and one-half of infected patients are asymptomatic. Determination of risk factors for HCV transmission is very important. The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors, transmission to spouses and children for HCV infection in Turkish population. One hundred and fifty-one patients with chronic hepatitis C and 151 control cases were investigated for the probable risk factors of HCV infection. Complete blood count, ALT, AST, albumin, prothrombin time, upper abdomen ultrasonography assessment and percutaneous liver biopsy (not for cirrhotics) were performed in all patients with chronic hepatitis C. Anti-HCV testing was done by using second-generation ELISA in 302 cases. Minor surgical operation (p < 0.001), major surgical operation (p = 0.001), blood transfusion (p < 0.001), multi-partner sex (p < 0.05), frequent dental therapy (p < 0.05), and dental extraction (p < 0.001) in patients with a chronic HCV infection were found to be higher than the control group. No significant difference was found in other risk factors. The rate of hepatitis C virus in index cases was found to be 1.8% in their spouses and 1.2% in their children. Our study showed that surgical operation, frequent dental therapy, dental extraction, multi-partner sex, and blood transmission are the main risk factors for HCV infection in Turkish community.

In this study, we have calculated the basic nuclear properties such as binding energies, root mean square (rms) charge radii, and neutron and proton densities of the eveneven natural 92-100 Mo isotopes. Investigations were performed using the Hartree-FockBogoliubov (HFB) method with different Skyrme-like forces. Separation energies, which have an important role in nuclear structure, of neutron, proton, deuteron, triton, helium-3 and alpha were also investigated with TALYS 1.4 code. The calculated results were discussed and compared with experimental results.

There are approximately 20 caves of limestone origin in Zonguldak (Turkey). In this study, the results of atmospheric radon measurements performed for two caves are presented. These caves, Gökgöl and Cehennemağzi, are open to tourism. Gökgöl Cave is the longer, at nearly 3,200 m in length. Cehenennemağzi is a pit-type cave with a total length of 85 m. The radon measurements were performed for 2 months between July 2004 and September 2004 using passive polycarbonate detectors. The mean radon concentrations were recorded as 1,918.8 Bq m(-3) in Gökgöl Cave and 657 Bq m(-3) in Cehennemağzi Cave. The maximum value corresponds to a site located 400 m from the entrance of Gökgöl Cave. Mean effective dose values for tourists of 0.86 microSv per visit to Cehennemağzi Cave and 3.76 microSv to Gökgöl Cave were obtained. These results show that protection against radiological hazards would not be necessary for visitors to these two caves.
