Anahtar Kelimeler: TIMSS, matematik başarısı, duyuşsal alan, çevresel faktör, öğretmen AbstractIn the study, it is aimed to investigate the student, teacher and school factors predicting mathematics achievement of Turkish 8th grade students in TIMSS 2015. The group of the study consists of 6079 students and 220 teachers who attended TIMSS from Turkey. The data of the study was obtained from student and teacher questionnaires and mathematics cognitive test scores. In the data analysis, multilevel regression analysis was used in which dependent variables were plausible mathematics scores and independent variables were student, teacher and school scale scores. According to results, 34% percent of student-level variance was explained by student-level variables. It was found that self-confidence level of students was the most important predictor of mathematics achievement among student-level variables. Additionally,...
This study aims to investigate what Turkish primary school teachers' goal orientations are in the teaching environment, how these goal orientations are correlated with one another and whether teachers' gender and teaching experiences make a significant difference. A relational survey method was used in this study. The participants consisted of 191 primary school teachers working at state schools in Nevşehir, Turkey. The "Goal Orientation Scale for Teaching", developed by Butler (2007) and finalized by Butler and Shibaz (2014), was used to collect the study data. The scale is composed of 21 five-point Likert-type items and consists of five sub-dimensions. To analyze the study data, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance and simple correlation techniques were used. According to the results, while teachers highly favored the "mastery" and "relational" goal orientations, the "work avoidance" goal orientation turned out to be the one for which they had the lowest average. This situation indicates that primary school teachers would rather organize activities which help them to teach better in the teaching environment, improve their professional knowledge and skills and build close and caring relationships with their students. It seems that workload is not important for teachers when it comes to promoting their students' efforts for learning. Also, there were significant differences between male and female teachers, as well as between newly-qualified and experienced teachers, with regard to the "ability approach" goal orientation. It appears that female and newly-qualified teachers want to be recognized and appreciated more for their teaching abilities and efforts than their colleagues.
Çalışmaların seçiminde Google Akademik, YÖK Akademik, YÖK Ulusal Tez Merkezi, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, EBSCOhost-ERIC, Web of Science veri tabanlarından faydalanılmıştır.
Teachers' goal orientations for teaching are one of the most important motivational beliefs affecting instructional processes. This study investigated the structural relationship between teachers' goal orientations for teaching and their attitudes towards their job through measures of self-efficacy and burnout. 495 teachers (working in primary, secondary, or high schools) participated in the study. Hypothetical models were created and tested using the variables mentioned above. The results suggest: 1) mastery goal orientation, through self-efficacy and burnout measures, is a positive predictor of attitudes towards teaching, 2) work-avoidance orientation, through self-efficacy and burnout measures, is a negative predictor of attitudes towards teaching and 3) ability-approach orientation has no effect on attitudes towards teaching. In addition, it has been found that the above goal orientations do not have a direct effect on teachers' attitudes towards teaching. The results are further discussed through comparisons to related literature.
ABSTRACT. The purpose of this study is to adapt Goal Orientations for Teaching Scale into Turkish upon carrying out relevant reliability and validity assessments on the scale. The study group is comprised of 584 teachers. The original scale (Goal Orientations for Teaching) consists 5 factors and 21 items, whereas as a result of exploratory factor analysis in scope of present study, 4 factors with 1 or greater eigen value have been established. Out of these factors, reliability value of the Skill Orientation factor was found to be α=.787 and its variance %24.56; reliability of Mastery factor at α=.638 and variance at %15.70; reliability of Avoidance factor at α=.605 and variance at %8.06; reliability of Student Relations factor at α=.673 and variance at %6.72; and reliability of entire scale was found to be at α=.761 and its variance at %55, respectively. Moreover, exploratory factor analysis indicated that the 4-factor and 15-item scale possesses plausible adaptive values (χ²/sd=1.43; RMSEA=.027; GFI=.98; AGFI=.96; CFI=.98; TLI=.98). The 4-factor and 15-item Turkish version of the scale, original of which contains 5 factors and 21 items in English, was found to be both reliable and valid. It was concluded that the adapted scale could be used to determine teachers' goal orientations towards teaching. Keywords: Teachers, Goal orientations for teaching, Adaptation scale SUMMARY Problem Status. Motivation is defined as internal or external impetus prompting inception, direction, focus and maintenance of behavior. Through motivation, individuals are able to guide themselves, give an objective to their behavior and select priority actions towards resisting against challenges during learning process. Studies on motivational factors affecting learning point out to goal orientation of students that is one of the motivational elements related to faith in achievement. The reason why a student determines a goal, if any, how s/he achieves such goal and evaluates own performance on what standards are issues related to goal orientation. During learning-teaching process, goal orientation for student becomes goal orientation for success of teacher at the same time. In Turkey, although the number of studies on goal orientation of students is high, there is a shortage of research in goal orientations for teachers. Therefore, a need for scales to measure goal orientation of teachers is evident.
