Die Unterscheidung der ,,funktionellen'" Hysterie yon der als ,,organisch" betrachteten Epilepsie besitzt heute noch, we wir das eigentliche Wesen beider Krankheiten nicht kennen, einen mehr heuristischen, als erkenntnistheoretischen Wert. Insbesondere muB man das Beweismaterial, auf welches die organische Grundlage der ,,genuinen" Epilepsie gesti]tzt wird, als ein unzureichendes betrachten. Chaslins Befunde iiber eine ,,Gliose neuroglique" der Hirnrinde bei Epileptikern sind yon anderen Autoren (Alzheimer) nicht konstant, odor an einer Anzahl yon Fitllen (Redlich, Binswanger) fiberhaupt nicht be-st~tigt worden. Die Pathogcnese beider Krankheiten ist grSBtenteils auf Vermutungen aufgebaut und wenn sich aus den bisherigen Erfahrungen einige Momente ergeben haben, welchen in der Atiologie eine gewisse Rolle zukommt (ich erwiihne die angeborene Disposition und das Einwirken eines Traumas) so linden wir sie gleichm~13ig bei beiden Krankheiten vet. Hi~lt man sich vor Augen, dab die klinische Offenbarung der Hysterie und Epilepsie manchmal so auffallend ~hnliche Ztige aufweist, dag ihre diagnostische Auseinanderhaltung auf Schwierigkeiten stSBt, so erscheint es als angebracht, angesichts der grol~en Umwiilzung, welche unsere Kenntnisse bezfiglich der Pathogeneso der Hysterie durch den Krieg erfuhren, auch der Frage ni~herzutreten, ob und inwieweit wir dutch die Kriegserfahrungen in die Pathogeneso tier Epilepsie eine bessere Einsicht gewannen.Die Existenz der genuinen Epilepsie als selbst~ndiger Krankheit steht oder fi~llt mit dem Erfolg oder MiBlingen des Bestrebens, ihr einen einheitlichen, scharf begrenzten pathologischen Rahmen zu schaffen. Dieses Streben beherrscht ja grSfttenteils die bisherigen Forschungen auf diesem Gebiete, ohne aber bis heute irgendein abschliel3endes Resultat gezeitigt zu haben.
