Many mud volcanoes are distributed along the tectonic sutures in southern Taiwan and can be divided into five zones based on their relative positions in different tectonic domains. Most active mud volcanoes are exhaling methane-dominated gases. Nevertheless, some gases show unusual carbon dioxide-dominated and/or nitrogen-excess compositions. This implies that there are multiple sources for the gas compositions of mud volcanoes in Taiwan. For better understanding the total amount of exhalation gases and its flux, the gas flow and compositions were continuously measured in the interval of two minutes at Chung-lun (CL) bubbling mud pool for a few months. The major compositions of gases exhaling from this site were 75$90% of CO 2 and 5$12% of CH 4 . The amount of gases exhaling from the mud pool can be estimated to be about 1.4 ton/year for CH 4 and 28 ton/year for CO 2 , respectively. The preliminary results of exhaling gas flux from the major vents of representative active mud volcanoes, yielded an estimated total CH 4 output of the mud volcanoes in Taiwan of ca. 29 ton/year during quiescent period.

Hsiao-you-keng and Liou-huang-ku were selected as testing sites to discuss factors pertaining to weather and sampling time as these may affect fumarolic gas composition. Test results show that the length of sampling time in this area mainly depends on the saturation of alkali solution. Furthermore, based on continuous data, gas composition of fumaroles seems not to be affected by weather factors. This implies that the de-gassing system in the Tatun volcanic area is quite steady and generated no significant variation in gas composition during the study period. These results indicate that current sampling and analytical procedures are suitable for volcanic gas study and further surveillance in the Tatun volcanic area.

Fluids and gases derived from dissociation of gas hydrates, which are typically methane enriched, affect the composition of seawater and sediments near venting areas. Hence, methane concentration of seawater and sediments become useful proxies for exploration of potential gas hydrates in a given area. We systematically collected bottom waters and sedimentary core samples for dissolved and pore-space gas analyses through five cruises: ORI-697, ORI-718, ORII-1207, ORII-1230, and ORI-732 from 2003 to 2005 in this study. Some sites with extremely high methane concentrations have been found in offshore southwestern Taiwan, e.g., sites G23 of ORI-697, N8 of ORI-718, and G96 of ORI-732. The methane concentrations of cored sediments display an increasing trend with depth. Furthermore, the down-core profiles of methane and sulfate reveal very shallow depths of sulfate methane interface (SMI) at some sites in this study. It implies sulfate reduction being mainly driven by the process of anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) in sediments; thus indicating that there is a methane-enriched venting source, which may be the product of dissociation of gas hydrates in this area.

Kueishantao is a Holocene volcanic islet (<7,000 yrs) located at NE offshore Taiwan, and tectonically is part of western extension of the Okinawa Trough. Magmatic activities are considered very active around this area on the basis of the fact that on-land fumaroles and submarine hydrothermal systems are prevailing currently. Representative bubble gas samples from submarine hydrothermal vents were collected for gas composition and helium isotope analysis. The gases show similar compositions of low temperatre fumaroles in the world, i.e., with high CO 2 and H 2 S but low SO 2 and HCl contents. They exhibit consistent high 3 He/ 4 He ratios (7.3-8.4 R A , where R A is the 3 He/ 4 He ratio of air), probably the highest 3 He/ 4 He values of gases ever reported in active hydrothermal areas of the western Pacific region. Meanwhile, seawater samples around Kueishantao and other fluid samples from I-Lan Plain, the land area closest to the Kueishantao and also the southernmost part of the Okinawa Trough, show a significant excess of 3 He compositions as well. This indicates that the mantle component plays an important role for their gas sources, and implies that the mantle fluids may have invaded into I-Lan Plain. The westward opening of the Okinawa Trough may have caused thinning of the continental crust and produced deep normal faults and hence, the primordial 3 He is able to degas from mantle source region without significant crust contamination.
