Fish use of Beaufort Sea coastal waters was examined during summer and winter periods 1977–80. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) were abundant but their occurrence was highly variable. They accounted for 8–78% of all fish caught in Simpson Lagoon during two summers, and 0.4–100% of catches at various coastal sites in winter. Arctic cod increased in abundance in the lagoon during late summer and some association was noted between their numbers and higher salinities but not temperature or turbidity. Some cod remained in shallow waters in early winter but deeper areas were used through the winter, and the highest catch rate was recorded 175 km offshore. Principal foods of the cod in nearshore waters were mysids (Mysis litoralis, M. relicta), amphipods (Onisimus glacialis), and copepods. The cod caught were generally small (60–170 mm) and young (ages 1–3). Most males matured at ages 2–3 and females at age 3. These size, age, and maturity characteristics indicate a life history strategy (r-selection) unlike that typified by many other arctic fish populations, particularly the freshwater and anadromous species which tend to be slow growing, late maturing and long-lived (K-selection).Key words: Arctic cod, Boreogadus saida; Beaufort Sea, distribution, life history strategy
Fishes with closed swim bladders regulate buoyancy during depth changes by secreting and resorbing swim bladder gases. Forced ascent during fishery capture results in barotrauma caused by rapid expansion and exsolution of gases from body fluids. Pressure changes in hyperbaric chambers were used to examine changes in swim bladder integrity and acclimation rates in two ecologically different, yet congeneric, species: black rockfish Sebastes melanops and China rockfish S. nebulosus. We also conducted simulatedcapture experiments to investigate the relationship between capture in a fishery, barotrauma from pressure change, and survival after release. Black rockfish acclimated faster than China rockfish to both increases and decreases in pressure, but both species were much slower to acclimate than other physoclists, such as Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Black rockfish required up to 48 h to acclimate from 4 atmospheres absolute (ATA; depth equivalent of 30 m) to surface pressure and required up to 168 h to become neutrally buoyant at 4 ATA after starting from surface pressure. In contrast, China rockfish required over 250 h to become neutrally buoyant at 4 ATA after starting from surface pressure. All black rockfish exposed to a 3-ATA decrease in pressure during simulated capture had ruptured swim bladders. However, mortality from simulated capture and subsequent recompression was low; only 3.3 6 1.7% (mean 6SE) mortality was observed after 21 d. In experiments with black rockfish, rapid recompression reversed visible barotrauma, suggesting that a quick return to depth could be used to minimize mortality of discarded black rockfish in nearshore fisheries.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, electronic monitoring (EM) has emerged as a cost‐efficient supplement to existing catch monitoring programmes in fisheries. An EM system consists of various activity sensors and cameras positioned on vessels to remotely record fishing activity and catches. The first objective of this review was to describe the state of play of EM in fisheries worldwide and to present the insights gained on this technology based on 100 EM trials and 12 fully implemented programmes. Despite its advantages, and its global use for monitoring, progresses in implementation in some important fishing regions are slow. Within this context, the second objective was to discuss more specifically the European experiences gained through 16 trials. Findings show that the three major benefits of EM were as follows: (a) cost‐efficiency, (b) the potential to provide more representative coverage of the fleet than any observer programme and (c) the enhanced registration of fishing activity and location. Electronic monitoring can incentivize better compliance and discard reduction, but the fishing managers and industry are often reluctant to its uptake. Improved understanding of the fisher's concerns, for example intrusion of privacy, liability and costs, and better exploration of EM benefits, for example increased traceability, sustainability claims and market access, may enhance implementation on a larger scale. In conclusion, EM as a monitoring tool embodies various solid strengths that are not diminished by its weaknesses. Electronic monitoring has the opportunity to be a powerful tool in the future monitoring of fisheries, particularly when integrated within existing monitoring programmes.

The advantages of an audit over a census approach to the review of video imagery in fishery monitoring. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1621–1627. Technology-based fishery monitoring, or electronic monitoring (EM), has emerged as an alternative to human observers and is being applied in a variety of fisheries. The method records sensor and image data from fishing operations, so can be used to provide 100% monitoring of catches and fishing activity. Alternatively, EM can be used to audit catch data self-reported by harvesters. If the random audit indicates that these data are sufficiently accurate, they can provide useful catch estimates with less reviewing time and, hence, cost. The audit approach was adopted in the groundfish hook-and-line fishery in British Columbia, Canada, in 2006, and experience has shown that it can meet operational requirements for accuracy and timeliness. It is also more robust to the impact of equipment malfunction and can provide an independent estimate of total catch. Moreover, because catch estimates are derived from self-reported data rather than “black-box” records, the estimation process is more transparent and intuitive and, hence, more trusted by harvesters. Although cost reduction is always a primary concern, the audit approach offers significant additional benefits that should be considered in the design and implementation of EM programmes.
