“…Standardized fisheries independent surveys could be a simple solution to overcoming this issue. Electronic observation systems still have limitations, especially regarding bycatch identification, but promising results indicate this system could also be a useful tool to improve both monitoring and data collection (Ames et al, 2007;Ruiz et al, 2014).…”

“…While no smalltooth sawfish were observed, the catch and safe release of a loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, was recorded by both the EM system and observer. The EM system was used to record commercial shrimp vessel operations during six trips, encompassing 1,733 h of video over 94 sea days, with a certified fishery observer also being pres-with varying levels of success (Ames et al, 2007;Kindt-Larsen et al, 2012;Ruiz et al, 2015;Stanley et al, 2015;van Helmond et al, 2015van Helmond et al, , 2017Bartholomew et al, 2018;van Helmond et al, 2019;Briand et al 1 ). Van Helmond et al (2019) provides a comprehensive review of global EM projects and programs, including 12 fisheries that currently have some form of electronic monitoring as part of their regulatory process.…”

“…However, other forms of electronic monitoring including, for example, video and sensor monitoring have seen limited adoption (Dunn & Knuckey, ). While fisheries such as the tropical tuna purse‐seine fishery have begun testing the reliability of these camera systems and compared their accuracy to on‐board observer data, the results have been varied (Ruiz et al., ). Cost‐efficient and‐effective MCS measures across all of these categories still need to be developed, supported and expanded to provide statistically significant sampling that can track not just species‐level impacts, but community and ecosystem level impacts and the necessary inputs to control and enforcement activities.…”
