Sugar Plantations and Territorial Resources in the Modernization Sugar Industry. A View from Morelos, 1880-1913The modernization of the sugar agro-industry in Morelos during Porfirio Díaz’s time was a crucial event in the long term history of this activity in the region. In this paper I will consider the control of land resources: land and water. The main argument is that the process of technological modernization of this agro-industry and the resulting modification of the productive scale was the trigger for traumatic economic and social transformations of the traditional social order and also of the stability of the productive system that had consolidated slowly over the previous centuries. This dynamic of structural change altered society’s equilibrium to such an extent that it created propitious conditions for the intense national political crisis that emerged in 1908 permitting local circumstances to produce a regional rural movement of such magnitude that it has become an unavoidable reference in the global history of twentieth century social struggles.
