This paper studies a second order generalized integrator-frequency locked loop (SOGI-FLL) control scheme applicable for 3-phase alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) pulse width modulation (PWM) converters used in DC distribution systems. The 3-phase AC/DC PWM converter is the most important power conversion system of DC distribution, since it can boost 380 Vrms 3-phase line-to-line AC voltage to 700 Vdc DC output with various DC load devices and grid voltages. The direct-quadrature (d-q) transformation, positive sequence voltage extraction, proportional integral (PI) voltage/current control, and phase locked loop (PLL) are necessary to control the 3-phase AC/DC PWM converter. Besides, a digital filter, such as low pass filter and all pass filter, are essential in the conventional synchronous reference frame-phase locked loop (SRF-PLL) method to eliminate the low order harmonics of input. However, they limit the bandwidth of the controller, which directly affects the output voltage and load of 3-phase AC/DC PWM converter when sever voltage fluctuation, such as sag, swell, etc. occurred in the grid. On the other hand, the proposed control method using SOGI-FLL is able to do phase angle detection, positive sequence voltage extraction, and harmonic filtering without additional digital filters, so that more stable and fast transient control is achieved in the DC distribution system. To verify the improvement of the characteristics in the unbalanced voltage and frequency fluctuation of the grid, a simulation and experiment are implemented with 50 kW 3-phase AC/DC PWM converter used in DC distribution.
This paper studies the voltage fluctuation of dc-link generated in a 13-level cascaded neutral point clamped (NPC)/h-bridge (CNHB) with single-phase active front end (AFE) at the input side of each cell. The voltage fluctuation may deteriorate the power factor (PF) and current harmonics in the system. In this paper, new adaptive filters are proposed to overcome the problem. The center frequency of the proposed filters can be automatically varied, which allows to eliminate the specific harmonics in the dc-link well rather than the conventional one. Therefore, it can reduce the fluctuation of dc-link and maintain high PF and low current harmonic distortion without additional circuits externally or the current harmonics injection technique. As a result, capacitance for the dc-link can be optimally designed, and even cost and volume of the system can be reduced. This paper analyzes reasons of increasing voltage fluctuation theoretically and the conventional filter and proposed two types of adaptive filters are compared. In addition, the optimal design method of the dc-link capacitor necessarily used in NPC/h-bridge is presented. To verify the principle and feasibility of the proposed control method, a simulation and experiment are implemented with the CNHB system.
This paper proposes an energy management system (EMS) of direct current (DC) microgrid. In order to implement the proposed EMS, the control and operation method of EMS is presented in this work. While most of the studies have individually examined the grid-connected mode used in building and the stand-alone operation mode applicable to the island, the proposed EMS allows it to be used in both grid-connected mode and stand-alone mode with 10 modes. In order to determine each mode in EMS, not only the amount of generated power, load power, and the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, but also the rated power of the energy storage system (ESS) converter that performs charging and discharging operations is additionally considered. Thus, various uncertainties that may occur in the actual DC microgrid environment can be improved. A laboratory-scale DC microgrid is fabricated to conduct experimental validation of proposed EMS. Experiments of DC microgrid with proposed EMS were performed for each mode, and the experiment waveforms of each power conversion device are included in detail.
