The mean age of the 11 patients with multiple cranial neuropathy (6 men, 5 women) was 49.2 ± 19.4 years, although 7 were aged 50 years or older. Eight patients had right-sided and three had left-sided facial paralysis. The initial degree of facial paralysis was House-Brackmann (HB) grade IV in four patients (36.4%) and HB grade V in seven (63.6%). Six patients showed improvement in symptoms, whereas five (45.6%) showed no improvement. The recovery rates from facial paralysis in patients with and without multiple cranial neuropathy were 54.5% and 82.9%, respectively, and the complete recovery rates were 27.3% and 67.7%, respectively.
Background and ObjectivesZZIt is essential to understand gas physiology of mastoid cavity to study the pathophysiology of middle ear diseases, and the surface area and volume of mastoid mucosa are important parameters for evaluating gas physiology. However, the surface area and mastoid volume of the mastoid cavity have not been practically measured yet. Therefore, we measured and compared surface area and volume of the mastoid cavity before and after mastoidectomy using a virtual mastoidectomy model. Subjects and MethodZZWe performed a virtual mastoidectomy using 10 cases of temporal bone CT indicating pneumatic mastoid. First, we removed all air cells after outlining with irregular AOI function after loading axial CT images to Image-Pro Plus 4.0. Then we filled the removed area with equal planes using local equalization filter. Finally, we calculated and compared the total surface area, volume and area to volume (A/V) ratio by estimating their circumference and area. ResultsZZThe mean surface area of pneumatized mastoid cavity was 127.8 cm 2 (range: 94.2-165.3 cm 2), and the mean volume was 7.1 cm 3 (range: 5.2-11.0 cm 3). The mean surface area and volume were altered to 42.8 cm 2 (range: 35.9-55.0 cm 2) and 12.6 cm 3 (range: 10.3-18.7 cm 3), respectively, after virtual mastoidectomy. As a result, the A/V ratio decreased from 18 to 3.4 after a virtual mastoidectomy in the pneumatic mastoid cavity. ConclusionZZWhen a complete mastoidectomy is performed in the pneumatic mastoid, the surface area is decreased by one third compared to a relatively minor increase in volume. Therefore, the surface area per unit volume is expected to greatly decrease after mastoidectomy. Some physiologic problems occurring after mastoidectomy could be more accurately explained using a virtual mastoidectomy model.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the oriental treatment on Irritant Dermatitis Caused by Wood Vinegar on Pustulosis Palmaris et Plantaris.Methods : After using Wood Vinegar, a patient suffers from erythema, pruritus, pain, desquamation of skin and degeneration of Pustulosis Palmaris et Plantaris. The patient was admitted to Dunsan oriental hospital for 15 days and took an oriental(venesection, herbal-medicine, and vapor treatment) treatment. To evaluate the results of this treatment, the improvement of symptoms(vesicles, pruritus, pain) was identified by patient's subjective expression and in lesion-symptom improvement.Results : The symptoms caused by Wood vinegar on both palms and soles were improved but the desquamation of skin remained.Conclusions : This study shows that the oriental medical treatment effects on the irritant dermatitis caused by Wood Vinegar. Also, the public should be aware of indiscreetly-used, natural herbal products as a folk remedy.
