Le présent article a pour objet les deux voyages en France du duc Frédéric Ier de Saxe-Gotha-Altenbourg. Il s’appuie sur les comptes rendus de ses différents déplacements en prêtant une attention toute particulière aux visites que le duc a effectuées à Paris, à Versailles et dans les châteaux et jardins des environs. Il s’arrête aussi sur les audiences que lui a accordées Louis XIV. Cette comparaison met en lumière les motifs divergents qui président aux deux voyages tout comme les différentes fonctions des écrits qui en rendent compte. Voyages et récits sont replacés dans le contexte des traditions familiales et dans celui des déplacements princiers en général.
