In the present study, CrN, CrAlN and CrAlTiN coatings were deposited using the cathodic arc evaporation technique. The structural investigations of these CrN based coatings were performed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffractometer. The hardness and adhesion strength values of coatings were determined via Vickers type microhardness tester and progressive load scratch tester, respectively. The wear performance of samples was established at ambient air and vacuum condition. All coatings grew in the “T zone” growth model and had a dense and columnar structure. The XRD patterns presented predominantly (220), (110), and (111) reflections. It was demonstrated that the quaternary coating had a higher texture parameter as 0.68, which was related to the highest thickness and hardness. Also, CrAlTiN coatings with the smallest mean crystallite size of ∼87 nm showed the best hardness, and this ensured relatively high scratch resistance. CrN and CrAlTiN coatings improved wear performance under ambient air condition but were not striking as under vacuum condition. The quaternary coating had a superior performance in the vacuum condition, but due to the high sensitivity of Ti to oxygen, it fell behind the CrN coating under ambient air condition.

Scaffolds provide a suitable environment for the bone tissue to maintain its self-healing ability and help new bone-cell formation by creating structures with similar mechanical properties to the surrounding tissue. In the modeling of the scaffolds, an optimum environment is tried to be provided by changing the geometrical properties of the cell architecture such as porosity, pore size, and specific surface area. For this purpose, different design approaches have been used in studies to change these properties. This study aims to determine whether scaffolds with similar porosities modeled by different design approaches exhibit distinct biomechanical behaviors or not. By using the Diamond lattice architecture, two different design approaches were constituted. The first approach has constant wall thickness and variable cell size, whereas the second approach contains variable wall thickness and constant cell size. The usage of different design approaches affected the amount of specific surface area in models with similar porosity. Mechanical compression tests were conducted via finite element analysis, while the permeability performance of configurations with similar porosities (50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90%) was evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics. The mechanical results revealed that the structural strength decreased with increasing porosity. Since their higher specific surface area causes lower pressure drops, the second group exhibits better permeability. In addition, it was found that to evaluate the wall shear stresses occurring on the scaffold surfaces properly, it is essential to consider the stress distributions within the scaffold rather than the maximum values.

Corrosion behavior is an important parameter for metallic biomaterials used in the body environment. To mimic bodily fluids, simulated body fluid (SBF) has been used extensively. Even though many studies focus on corrosion inside SBF, SBF has a very time consuming and delicate preparation procedure and contains no essential and organic components for the cell environment, which may affect corrosion kinetics. We aimed to investigate whether corrosion behavior or kinetics change in different solutions, SBF and Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM). For this purpose, five commonly used metallic biomaterials, AISI 316 stainless steel, CoCrMo alloy, CP‐Ti, Ti6Al4V, and Ti6Al7Nb were subjected to open circuit measurements, cyclic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Quantitative analyses were performed and surface topography was investigated via scanning electron microscope and a roughness tester. We observed that the materials exhibited similar behaviors in SBF and DMEM but the corrosion kinetics were somewhat different and the results obtained from DMEM were time dependent.
