Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) reduce the negative effects of soil calcification on soil phosphorus (P) nutrition. In this incubation study, we explored the ability of PSB (control and inoculated) to release P from different P sources [single super phosphate (SSP), rock phosphate (RP), poultry manure (PM) and farm yard manure (FYM)] with various soil lime contents (4.78, 10, 15 and 20%) in alkaline soil. PSB inoculation progressively enriched Olsen extractable P from all sources compared to the control over the course of 56 days; however, this increase was greater from organic sources (PM and FYM) than from mineral P sources (SSP and RP). Lime addition to the soil decreased bioavailable P, but this effect was largely neutralized by PSB inoculation. PSB were the most viable in soil inoculated with PSB and amended with organic sources, while lime addition decreased PSB survival. Our findings imply that PSB inoculation can counteract the antagonistic effect of soil calcification on bioavailable P when it is applied using both mineral and organic sources, although organic sources support this process more efficiently than do mineral P sources. Therefore, PSB inoculation combined with organic manure application is one of the best options for improving soil P nutrition.
Photoperiod is one of the most important maternal factors with an impact on the offspring diapause induction of Locusta migratoria. Previous studies have shown that forkhead box protein O (FOXO) plays an important role in regulating insect diapause, but how photoperiod stimulates maternal migratory locusts to regulate the next generation of egg diapause through the FOXO signaling pathway still needs to be addressed. In this study, the transcriptomes of ovaries and fat bodies of adult locusts under a long and short photoperiod were obtained. Among the total of 137 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in both ovaries and fat bodies, 71 DEGs involved in FOXO signaling pathways might be closely related to diapause induction. 24 key DEGs were selected and their expression profiles were confirmed to be consistent with the transcriptome results using qRT-PCR. RNA interference was then performed to verify the function of retinoic acid induced protein gene (rai1) and foxo. Egg diapause rates were significantly increased by RNAi maternal locusts rai1 gene under short photoperiods. However, the egg diapause rates were significantly decreased by knock down of the foxo gene in the maternal locusts under a short photoperiod. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were promoted by RNAi rai1. We identified the candidate genes related to the FOXO pathway, and verified the diapause regulation function of rai1 and foxo under a short photoperiod only. In the future, the researchers can work in the area to explore other factors and genes that can promote diapause induction under a long photoperiod.
Objectives. To determine the demographics and analyze the management and factors influencing the postoperative complications of hypospadias repair. Settings. Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, Pakistan, from January 2007 to December 2011. Material and Methods. All male patients presenting with hypospadias irrespective of their ages were included in the study. The data were acquired from the hospital's database and analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results. A total of 428 patients with mean age of 8.12 ± 5.04 SD presented for hypospadias repair. Midpenile hypospadias were the most common. Chordee, meatal abnormalities, cryptorchidism, and inguinal hernias were observed in 74.3%, 9.6%, 2.8%, and 2.1% cases, respectively. Two-stage (Bracka) and TIP (tubularized incised urethral plate) repairs were performed in 76.2% and 20.8% of cases, respectively. The most common complications were edema and urethrocutaneous fistula (UCF). The complications were significantly lower in the hands of specialists than residents (P-value = 0.0086). The two-stage hypospadias repair resulted in higher complications frequency than single-stage repair (P value = 0.0001). Conclusion. Hypospadias surgery has a long learning curve because it requires a great deal of temperament, surgical skill and acquaintance with magnifications. Single-stage repair should be encouraged wherever applicable due to its lower postoperative complications.
Due to extensive utilization of fossil fuels, the energy demand of the growing population of the world is increasing day by day. The utilization of these fossil fuels also results in environmental pollution and energy crisis around the globe. As such, scientists and academics are trying to develop green materials which tend to reduce the impact of human on environment. Starch is the most abundant organic compound found in nature after cellulose. Thus, starch is an attractive natural green material candidate for researchers to replace the petro‐chemical‐based ingredients in wood composite products. There is an increasing demand for the wood adhesives in the recent years due to increasing applications of wood products. The wood adhesive industry remains dependent on the petroleum resources due to attributes such as high performance and low cost. However, these adhesives can create serious risks to human health and spoil the indoor air quality by emitting these carcinogenic compounds into the environment. Therefore, there is a growing interest to replace the petro‐chemical based ingredients in the adhesive formulation with green renewable material. This review focuses on research conducted in the recent past to develop adhesive for wood application from green renewable material such as starch.
