Age-corrected Pb, Sr and Nd isotope ratios for early Aptian basalt from four widely separated sites on the Ontong Java Plateau that were sampled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 192 cluster within the small range reported for three earlier drill sites, for outcrops in the Solomon Islands, and for the Nauru and East Mariana basins. Hf isotope ratios also display only a small spread of values. A vitric tuff with eNd(t) = +4.5 that lies immediately above basement at Site 1183 represents the only probable example from Leg 192 of the Singgalo magma type, flows of which comprise the upper 46-750 m of sections in the Solomon Islands and at Leg 130 Site 807 on the northern flank of the plateau. All of the Leg 192 lavas, including the high-MgO (8-10 wt%) Kroenke-type basalts found at Sites 1185 and 1187, have eNd(t) between +5.8 and +6.5. They are isotopically indistinguishable from the abundant Kwaimbaita basalt type in the Solomon Islands, and at previous plateau, Nauru Basin and East Mariana Basin drill sites. The little-fractionated Kroenke-type flows thus indicate that the uniform isotopic signature of the more evolved Kwaimbaita-type basalt (with 5-8 wt% MgO) is not simply a result of homogenization of isotopically variable magmas in extensive magma chambers, but instead must reflect the signature of an inherently rather homogeneous (relative to the scale of melting) mantle source. In the context of a plume-head model, the Kwaimbaita-type magmas previously have been inferred to represent mantle derived largely from the plume source region. Our isotopic modelling suggests that such mantle could correspond to originally primitive mantle that experienced a rather minor fractionation event (e.g. a small amount of partial melting) approximately 3 Ga or earlier, and subsequently evolved in nearly closed-system fashion until being tapped by plateau magmatism in the early Aptian. These results are consistent with current models of a compositionally distinct lower mantle and a plume-head origin for the plateau. However, several other key aspects of the plateau are not easily explained by the plume-head model. The plateau also poses significant challenges for asteroid impact, Icelandic-type and plate separation (perisphere) models. At present, no simple model appears to account satisfactorily for all of the observed first-order features of the Ontong Java Plateau.Several massive volcanic plateaus appeared at equatorial to mid-southern latitudes in the Pacific Basin between the latest Jurassic and the middle Cretaceous. Flood basalts, such as the Deccan Traps of India, represent huge, typically fissure-fed volcanic provinces. We discuss the structural attributes and emplacement mechanics of a large, linear, tholeiitic dyke swarm exposed in the Nandurbar-Dhule area of the Deccan province. The swarm contains 210 dykes of dolerite and basalt >1 km in length, exposed over an area of 14,500 km 2 . The dykes intrude an exclusively basaltic lava pile, largely composed of highly weathered and zeolitized compound pahoehoe flows. The dykes range in length from <1 km to 79 km, and in thickness from 3 to 62 m. Almost all dykes are vertical, with the others nearly so. They show a strong preferred orientation, with a mean strike of N88°. Because they are not emplaced along faults or fractures, they indicate the regional minimum horizontal compressive stress (σ 3 ) to have been aligned ∼N-S during swarm emplacement. The dykes have a negative power law length distribution but an irregular thickness distribution; the latter is uncommon among the other dyke swarms described worldwide. Dyke length is not correlated with dyke width. Using the aspect ratios (length/thickness) of several dykes, we calculate magmatic overpressures required for dyke emplacement, and depths to source magma chambers that are consistent with results of previous petrological and gravity modelling. The anomalously high source depths calculated for a few dykes may be an artifact of underestimated aspect ratios due to incomplete along-strike exposure. However, thermal erosion is a mechanism that can also explain this. Whereas several of the Nandurbar-Dhule dykes may be vertically injected dykes from shallow magma chambers, others, particularly the long ones, must have been formed by lateral injection from such chambers. The larger dykes could well have fed substantial (≥1,000 km 3 ) and quickly emplaced (a few years) flood basalt lava flows. This work highlights some interesting and significant similarities, and contrasts, between the Nandurbar-Dhule dyke swarm and regional tholeiitic dyke swarms in Iceland, Sudan, and elsewhere.

Barren Island (India) is a relatively little studied, little known active volcano in the Andaman Sea, and the northernmost active volcano of the great Indonesian arc. The volcano is built of prehistoric (possibly late Pleistocene) lava flows (dominantly basalt and basaltic andesite, with minor andesite) intercalated with volcaniclastic deposits (tuff breccias, and ash beds deposited by pyroclastic falls and surges), which are exposed along a roughly circular caldera wall. There are indications of a complete phreatomagmatic tephra ring around the exposed base of the volcano. A polygenetic cinder cone has existed at the centre of the caldera and produced basalt-basaltic andesite aa and blocky aa lava flows, as well as tephra, during historic eruptions (1787-1832) and three recent eruptions (1991,. The recent aa flows include a toothpaste aa flow, with tilted and overturned crustal slabs carried atop an aa core, as well as locally developed tumuli-like elliptical uplifts having corrugated crusts. Based on various evidence we infer that it belongs to either the 1991 or the 1994-95 eruptions. The volcano has recently (2008) begun yet another eruption, so far only of tephra. We make significantly different interpretations of several features of the volcano than previous workers. This study of the volcanology and eruptive styles of the Barren Island volcano lays the ground for detailed geochemical-isotopic and petrogenetic work, and provides clues to what the volcano can be expected to do in the future.
