Several researches and technologies on polymer recycling have been driven and justified by the uncontrolled and crescent polymer waste generation in the world. Herein, a critical and concise review on the recent and well-established recycling practices for polymer waste is presented, taking into account not only thermoplastics (or plastics) but also thermosets and elastomers. Moreover, sorting and characterization techniques for polymer waste recycling are detailed and their importance is discussed. An in-depth analysis of the literature indicated that novel and advanced recycling methods for polymeric waste (PW) present difficulties to be applied in the industrial sector, mainly the scientific innovations in the chemical recycling area. In the current scenario, new challenges for the recycling sector are linked to highly contaminated PW from electrical, electronic, and medical products.
This work seeks bringing a technological and social contribution by searching blends and composites of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and polyethylene widely used in packaging films, and colloidal silica. The mixtures were prepared by extrusion using a single-screw extruder and were analyzed regarding their thermal and mechanical properties and morphology. The results have shown PHB toughness in the studied compositions, which elongation at break was in the range 5-80% compared to 2% for neat PHB. The small amount (0.2 to 0.4%) of added silica seemed to increase in 20% the tensile strength. The thermal degradation by thermogravimetry from room temperature to 800 8C revealed a mixed behavior for the composites between PHB and polyethylene.
Resumo: Este trabalho avalia a utilização da cinza da casca de arroz como carga estrutural em poliamida 6 e poliamida 6.6. Estas matrizes poliméricas são importantes plásticos de engenharia com aplicações em várias áreas. Fez-se uma comparação das propriedades mecânicas de resistência à tração, resistência à flexão, resistência ao impacto e a propriedade térmica de fio incandescente entre compostos de poliamida 6 e poliamida 6.6, com 30% de cinza da casca de arroz, e compostos de poliamidas com 30% de talco. Os resultados das propriedades mecânicas e térmica mostraram um comportamento semelhante entre as poliamidas com 30% de cinza da casca de arroz e as poliamidas com 30% de talco. Assim sendo, o uso da cinza da casca de arroz é uma alternativa viável para a substituição do talco como carga, como foi comprovado ao confeccionar um conector elétrico injetado com poliamida 6.6 com 30% de cinza da casca de arroz. Portanto, este trabalho contribui para a diminuição de um problema ambiental, possibilitando o uso da cinza da casca de arroz em processos industriais.

Study of the use of Rice Husk Ash as Filler in Polyamide 6 and Polyamide 6.6 MatricesAbstract: This work evaluates the technical viability of the use of rice husk ash as filler in polyamide 6 and polyamide 6.6 which are one of the main engineering plastics with applications in several areas. A comparison was made among the mechanical properties of tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength and the thermal property of glow wire of polyamide 6 and polyamide 6.6 compounds with 30% of rice husk ash and the compounds of these polyamides with 30% of talc. The results of mechanical and thermal properties showed a similar behavior among the polymeric matrices of polyamide with 30% of rice husk ash and 30% of talc. This was verified by the manufacturing of an electric connector injected with polyamide 6.6 with 30% of rice husk ash. Thus, the use of rice husk ash is a viable alternative for the substitution of talc as filler. So, this work contributes for minimizing an environmental problem by enabling the use of rice husk ash in productive processes.
