RESUMODiscute a questão do Acesso Livre 1 ao conhecimento científico, abordando, de maneira sucinta, seus impactos na pesquisa. Discorre sobre algumas das principais questões relacionadas ao uso de tecnologias da informação na comunicação científica, com ênfase em questões recentes, como o auto-arquivamento de trabalhos científicos em repositórios (via verde) e os periódicos científicos eletrônicos de Acesso Livre (via dourada). Tais questões são focadas simultaneamente como uma reação dos pesquisadores ao modelo de negócios vigente nas editoras científicas comerciais e uma conscientização do grande aumento de impacto dos documentos disponibilizados em Acesso Livre. Acrescenta a essa discussão informação sobre as políticas institucionais necessárias à implementação plena do Acesso Livre. Trata das principais tecnologias que suportam o Acesso Livre, tais como sistemas de gestão de repositórios e de revistas científicas que obedecem às especificações OAI. Além disso, discute perspectivas futuras que deverão nortear as políticas, a tomada de decisões e as ações por parte das instituições acadêmicas e governamentais que garantam o Acesso Livre, particularmente nos países lusófonos.Palavras-chave: Comunicação científica. A notícia do crescimento da produção científica brasileira trouxe alegrias e tristezas. Alegrias porque essa notícia significa avanço nas pesquisas científicas brasileiras. Tristezas porque poucos têm acesso a essa produção científica. Esse fato é conseqüência do alto custo das assinaturas das revistas científicas onde os resultados das pesquisas são publicados. As nossas bibliotecas com seus parcos orçamentos não conseguem manter a assinatura de suas coleções de revistas científicas. Os nossos pesquisadores conseguem ter acesso à informação científica graças ao Portal de Periódicos da Capes, que coloca à disposição das universidades públicas cerca de dez mil títulos de publicações periódicas científicas. É importante ressaltar que apenas uma parte da comunidade científica é beneficiada com esse acesso, pois a comunidade científica como um todo não se resume apenas às universidades públicas.Outro aspecto a ressaltar é o fato de os dez mil títulos disponibilizados, pelo referido portal, não representarem a totalidade das publicações periódicas científicas. Segundo Stevan Harnad, um dos líderes do movimento global de acesso livre à literatura científica, estima-se que haja no mundo 25 mil títulos de revistas com revisão pelos pares, as quais publicam cerca de um milhão de artigos por ano.Contudo, as facilidades proporcionadas pelas novas tecnologias da informação e da comunicação, aliadas ao movimento mundial em prol do acesso livre à literatura científica, fazem surgir um cenário otimista. Um cenário onde as barreiras que dificultam o acesso à literatura científica começam a ser derrubadas por intermédio de ações estratégicas propostas por esse movimento mundial.Liinc em Revista, nesse momento, oportuno, dedica esta edição especial à discussão do acesso livre à literatura científica, levando ao conhecimento de seus leitores as problemáticas da comunicação científica, os fundamentos desse movimento global e suas estratégias para a implantação do acesso livre à literatura científica. Assim, farei um breve destaque das discussões apresentadas, por alguns autores, nesta edição, sobre as ações desse movimento e suas conseqüências.
