The introduction of ultraviolet disinfection of sewage effluent in Jersey has served to focus attention on other sources of faecal pollution responsible for subsequent compliance failures in coastal water quality in St Aubin's Bay. Studies of microbial concentrations (total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci) in streams draining to the bay showed concentrations to be elevated by an order of magnitude or more following rainfall. Detailed monitoring of indicator organisms during hydrograph events showed rapid increases in concentration with flow associated with the rising limb of the hydrograph and transport of suspended solids. Microbial budget estimates suggested that between 42 and 97% of microbial delivery was associated with high flows, which account for just 20% of the total discharge. Budgets also revealed the relative importance of different catchment inputs, revealing the low bacterial input associated with UV treated effluent which provided 48% of the total volume discharged to the bay. Implications for water quality standards are discussed with reference to catchment management planning.
A new method is presented for calculating a building-specific subslab to indoor air attenuation factor for use in assessing subsurface vapor intrusion to indoor air. The technique includes (1) subslab gas extraction with flow and vacuum measurements and mathematical modeling to characterize the bulk average vertical gas conductivity of the floor slab, (2) monitoring of the ambient pressure gradient across the floor slab with a micromanometer, (3) calculating the volumetric flow of soil gas into the building ( Q), and (4) dividing Q by the building ventilation rate ( Q) to calculate a building-specific attenuation factor. Sample calculations using order statistics from 121 individual tests are comparable to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency empirical attenuation factors for residential buildings and the U.S. Navy empirical attenuation factors for commercial/industrial buildings. A case study of a commercial building shows encouraging agreement between the attenuation factors calculated via this method and via conventional subslab and indoor air sampling.
Compliance monitoring of bathing waters at La Grève de Lecq on the North coast of Jersey revealed a significant deterioration in water quality between 1992 and 1993, as indexed by presumptive coliform, presumptive Escherichia coli and streptococci concentrations. During the 1993 bathing season the beach failed to attain the compliance with the EC Guideline criteria for presumptive E. coli and streptococci. A bacteriological survey of the stream catchment draining to the beach revealed that: (i) concentrations of faecal indicator organisms were enhanced at high discharge after rainfall; and (ii) a captive water fowl population, which expanded between 1990 and 1993, was a potential source of faecal pollution. Strategies for catchment management are discussed.
The introduction of ultraviolet disinfection in Jersey has achieved significant improvements in water quality. However, bathing waters in St Aubin's Bay and shellfish flesh have failed to comply with microbial standards. Streams and seepages from coastal structures were investigated as potential indicator organism sources (total and faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci). Seepages were an unimportant bacterial source as concentrations were low. Geometric mean concentrations in streams were up to four orders of magnitude higher than in final sewage‐treatment works effluent, and concentrations increased significantly at high stream discharge. Rainfall‐induced pulses of poor water quality occurred two to three times per week during the 1993 summer season. Natural discharges from island catchments thus contribute significantly to the bacterial load received at the coast, especially during high flow events. These observations have implications for other UK and European schemes using tertiary disinfection technology to attain water quality targets in coastal waters.
