This study was performed to investigate the effects of heat treatment the on mechanical properties of two species of wood under different heating conditions including at 180℃ for 12 h and 24 h, and at 210℃ for 3 h and 6 h. Two species of wood, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi, were exposed to different heat treatments to assess the effects on the volume change, bending properties in static and dynamic mode and compressive strength. The results showed heat treatment caused significant changes in mechanical properties such as the static and dynamic moduli of elasticity (MOEd and MOEs), and the modulus of rupture (MOR). The volume of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The bending strength performance of the wood after heat treatment decreased as the heating temperature and time were increased. The effect of heat treatment at a high temperature on the bending MOR was greater in both species than that for a long time. However, the compressive strengths of all the heat-treated samples were higher than the control sample. Furthermore, highly significant correlations between MOEd and MOR, and MOEs and MOR were found for all heating conditions.
Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources that have many advantages such as fast growing, easy cultivation, short rotation, and a relatively lower price. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) by age from one-year-old to five-year-old were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also, the crystalline properties such as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were investigated by an X-ray diffraction method. In one-year-old bamboo xylem, a few vascular bundles showed missing bundle sheath in near the intercellular space. Moreover, one-year-old bamboo had the shortest fiber length and the smallest values in vessel diameter, width of vascular bundle, and thickness of inner layer. One-year-old bamboo also showed the smallest values in the crystallinity 1 Date
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for woodceramics made by different phenol resin impregnation ratios (40, 50, 60, 70%) for Broussonetia Kazinoki Sieb. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing resin impregnation ratios. There was a close relationship between dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity and between dynamic modulus of elasticity and MOR and between static bending modulus of elasticity and MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of woodceramics made by different impregnation ratios.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
