This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of language politeness in students' WhatsApp (WA) messages to their lecturers. The research method used was a descriptive method with data consisting of 460 WA messages from 75 students. From this study, it is revealed that 88.7% of the characteristic of students' WA message structure begin with greetings, an apology for sending WA message, self-introduction, message, and thanks with greetings. 82.6% of WA messages are characterized by conversational language style in which they are a fully structured idea which represented using subject and predicate with several omissions in a certain part. The contents of the WA messages consist of 20% of the final project topics such as clarifying supervising schedule, discussing the content of final project, informing the schedule of final project presentation; 66.6% of WA messages contain lecture topics such as informing rescheduled lectures, asking about assignments, asking about score, permission for being absent; and 13.4% of WA messages contain other topics such as felicitations and condolences. Thus, the WA messages sent by the students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung to their lecturers show the characteristics of language politeness.
The study of grammar in Bangka Malay is still limited. The discussion about the phatic category in the speech of Bangka Malay Language will be one of the important discourses in Bangka Malay language. In the speech of Bangka Malay language, the phatic category is often found. This study will explain the role of the phatic category as an affirmation and confirmation in the speech of Bangka Malay language. The theory of the phatic category from Kridalaksana will be the basis of the study with the equivalent method as a foundation in the review process. Research data is collected from live conversations and conversations of community group of Bangka people in WhatsApp. From the conversation data, the commonly used forms of Fatis, ge, be, and kek will be explored their meaning and function. Those meaning and function are determined by pairing and aligning it with the Fatis form in Indonesian. Thus, it will be known what the meaning and function of phatic language is Malay Bangka. From the research it appears that the use of phatic category in Bangka Malay language serves as a speech affirmation and confirmation so that the presence of this element in speech is necessary.The results of this study will be the basis for the next reseach about how the characteristics and patterns of Fatis forms can determine meaning based on the Fatis forms position.
Changes in patterns, requirements, and competition for industrial workers have caused language lectures, both Indonesian and English courses, to be encouraged to prepare graduates from polytechnic non-engineering majors to have language competencies that are in line with industry needs. For this reason, a research was conducted on "Language Competence of Graduates of the Polytechnic Non-Engineering Department Needed by the Business World and the Industrial World" which can be used as a reference for syllabus formulation and study material for language lectures. This study aims to describe the language competencies needed by the business world and the industrial world. To achieve this goal, the descriptive method is used with the data sources of this research consisting of resource persons, namely non-engineering alumni as well as the business and industrial world as well as curriculum documents of the Bandung State Polytechnic Department of Non-engineering, documents regarding KKNI, industrial competency references and language competencies. From this research, it is known that the language competencies needed by the industrial world are 1) writing competence for office administration activities: correspondence, making reports, designing activities/proposals, making agendas and meeting minutes, developing own ideas or other people's ideas; 2) speaking competence for presentations, telephone calls, communicating with relations, negotiating, and promoting; 3) the competence to read accurately, quickly and fluently to manage information, SOPs & work instructions, company rules / regulations, process data accurately, and 4) listening competence to communicate and negotiate. These competencies are in accordance with the qualifications of the KKNI level 5 and 6 which must be possessed by polytechnic D3 and D4 graduates.
