Research into self-efficacy has received widespread recognition in the literature. However, little study has been done on students’ self-efficacy in asynchronous online academic interactions. This study examined graduate students’ self-efficacy in regulating their online interaction strategies. Grounded in the Asynchronous Online Self-Regulated Learning Inventory (AOSRLI), the study employed a virtual case study using an online self-assessment survey and focus group interview. Seventy-eight English education master students from two universities were approached and agreed to participate in the study. As a result, the study highlighted several critical findings: 1) lack of confidence in online interaction with the professors, 2) closed-mindedness to criticism, 3) self-fanaticism, and 4) the need for self-dialoguing and self-navigation. The students were commonly inactive, indifferent, and demotivated in their asynchronous online interactions, thus creating ineffective learning communication among them. Self-regulated learning cannot grow alone and rely on the students’ in-person learning initiatives, whereas they need pedagogical imperatives to scaffold their questioning, responding, and critiquing skills. The study suggests improving teachers’ scaffolding strategies and building students’ online community of practice to promote their activeness, engagement, and participation. The implication of this study calls for the inclusion of asynchronous virtual interaction skills into online learning pedagogy and CALL teacher education.

In religious contexts, prayers are essential communication between humanity and the divine. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the concept of politeness in the context of the Qur'anic prayers delivered by the Prophets. By adopting a Qur'anic discourse perspective, the study uncovered the underlying patterns and linguistic devices used in expressing reverence and humility before God. It also aimed to identify the communication strategies used in the prayers to determine how these principles were manifested. There was an argument that the communication strategy employed by the prophets implicitly manifested their humility and politeness, a fundamental attribute of the messengers of God. To address this, the politeness maxims proposed by Leech and insights into strategies in interpersonal communication developed by Brown and Levinson served as an analytical framework for examining politeness discourse strategies within prayer utterances. In addition, pragmatic identity and contextual methods were employed to understand the context of these utterances. The results showed several politeness maxims observed in the Qur'anic prayers of the prophets, including the maxims of tact, approval, and modesty. It also revealed the wisdom evident in their language and behavior. The Prophets utilized two strategies in their pursuit of politeness: the 'on-record' strategy, characterized by direct and explicit expressions and the 'off-record' strategy, involving indirect and subtle expressions. This study contributed to a deeper understanding of politeness's linguistic and cultural implications in religious communication. It also provided insight into the divine-human relationship portrayed in the Qur'an.

Communication using digital media has highly increased since the pandemic, including within education context. Different types of expectation between the involved parties sometimes causing communication challenge for both. This study aims to find out how educators viewed the courtesy shown by the students during interactions using instant messaging media. Specifically, it aims to find out politeness indicators, communication challenges, and educators’ expectations. The interview questions included the concept of appropriate and polite messages between students as well as the overall attitudes of students within WhatsApp communication. The interviews are transcribed and coded based on what is listed in the framework. The results of the study reveal that most lecturers agreed students are adept in establishing communication through WhatsApp, compared to those in the past by incorporating greetings to open a conversation, stating identity, thanking and closing to end the conversation. Aside from a small number of students having trouble following etiquette, challenges appeared mostly when educators did not set clear rules on what they expected regarding WhatsApp communication. Educators have lower expectations on WhatsApp use in non-academic context.
