ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Es wurde die Chromosomenzahl 67 finnlandischer Tagschmetterlinge in den Reifeteilungen festgestellt, bei der Mehrzahl in beiden Geschlechtern, bei den ubrigen nur in dem einen. (Siehe Tabelle 1.) Die Chromosomenzahl schwankt zwischen 11 und 32; 58 % der Arten haben 29—31 Chromosomen. (Siehe Diagramm II.) Es ist auffallend, dass in funf Familien eine Art mit einer stark verminderten Chromosomenzahl vorkommt. Die bedeutende Grosse dieser Chromosomen lasst auf Sammelchromosomen schliessen, die vermutlich infolge einer Mutation durch Fusion mehrerer Chromosomen entstanden sind. (Siehe Diagramm I.) Bei vielen Arten ist die Chromosomenzahl in den beiden Geschlechtern verschieden. In dem einen Geschlecht sinnnd zwei Chromosomen miteinander vereinigt, wahrend sie in dem anderen frei sind. Die Fusion ist bei funf Arten im weiblichen Geschlecht gefunden worden, im mannlichen nur bei einer. Auch verschiedene Rassen konnen verschiedene Chromosomenzahlen besitzen. Die Chromosomenzahl der Spermatozyten eines und desselben Testis kann auch verschieden sein. Hier sin des vermutlich rein peristatische Einflusse, die die Chromosomenzahl bestimmen. Nur bei einer Art, Augiades sylvanus, konnte die zweite Reifeteilung im Ei erforscht warden. Hier kommt vermutlich ein Geschlechtschromosomenpaar vor, dessen Partner von verschiedener Grosse sind. Die Chromosomenzahl ist ein phanotypisches Merkmal, das wie alle Eigenschaften teils von Genen, teils von der Umwelt bestimmt wird. Bei der ontogenetischen Entwicklung spielt die Zahl der Chromosomen eine untergeordnete Rolle; die Gene beiden Genome bestimmen die Entwicklung. Im Mechhanismus der Keimzellenbildung, Chromosomen, ist dagegen die Chromosomenzahl von vitaler Bedeutung.

Zusammenfassung. In einer Zucht des Schmetterlings Pygaera pigra wurden lauter ♀‐Puppen, 39 an der Zahl, erhalten, während alle ♂‐Raupen zugrunde gingen. 11 der aus diesen Puppen ausschlüpfenden Weibchen wurden mit Männchen von pigra und solchen der verwandten Art curtula gepaart. Die elf Zuchten ergaben wieder lauter ♀‐Puppen, zusammen 226 Stück, dagegen keine einzige ♂‐Puppe. In sämtlichen Zuchten starben alle ♂‐Raupen, die meisten vermutlich an Tumoren. Bei 128 Raupen konnte durch Sektion festgestellt werden, dass es sich um Männchen handelte und dass die Tumoren die Todesursache waren. Dagegen konnte bei keiner ♀‐Raupe mit Sicherheit ein Tumor entdeckt werden. Dass die Tumorkrankheit erblich bedingt ist, ist also klar, ebenso dass alle Weibchen, trotzdem sie phänotypisch gesund sind und von gesunden Männchen befruchtet werden, den Tumorfaktor vererben, und zwar allen ihren Söhnen, die zugrunde gehen und also von der Fortpflanzung ausgeschlossen werden, und allen ihren Töchtern, die wiederum die Rolle von Konduktoren spielen. Ein solcher Vererbungsmodus ist bisher nicht bekannt. Er kann nicht als geschlechtskontrolliert betrachtet werden, und ebenso wenig kann man sich den Tumorfaktor als in einem der Geschlechtschromosomen lokalisiert denken. Denn in allen Fällen müssten — da der Vater ja immer gesund sein muss — auch gesunde Tiere entstehen. Dies ist jedoch nicht der Fall. Verf. sucht die Erklärung des eigentümlichen Vererbungsmodus in einer Entwicklung der Polkerne, die ja abortive Eier sind und sich bei vielen Insekten teilen können und sogar bestimmte Organe bilden. Er vermutet, dass die Teilung durch eine Mutation im Y‐Chromosom ausgelöst wird. Die Weibchen haben die Formel XY, und ihre Polkerne verschmelzen zu einem triploiden Kern XXY. Das im Y‐Chromosom mutierte Gen, das einen schnellen Mitoserythmus auslöst und rezessiv ist, vermag sich in der Gegenwart des X‐Chromosoms nicht zu manifestieren. Demzufolge entwickelt sich das Weibchen normal und die Polkerne verhalten sich auch normal, d. h. sie teilen sich einige Male und degenerieren bald. Aber jedes Weibchen vererbt das Y‐Chromosom allen seinen Töchtern, und so wird das mutierte Gen von Generation zu Generation durch phänotypisch gesunde Weibchen übertragen. Die Männchen haben dagegen die Formel XX und erzeugen einen triploiden Polkern mit der Geschlechtschromosomenkombination XYY. Hier hat das eine X‐Chromosom nicht die Macht die doppelte Wirkung der mutierten Gene in den beiden Y‐Chromosomen zu unter‐drücken, und die Polkerne fangen sofort an sich lebhaft zu teilen. Die zahlreichen Deszendenten der Polkerne können während der embryonalen Entwicklung in fast alle Teile des Raupenkörpers verlegt werden. Dort bilden sie infolge ihrer schnell sich wiederholenden Mitosen Zellaggregate, die sich unter dem Einfluss der Nachbargewebe in verschiedene Richtungen differenzieren. So entstehen die Tumoren.
