Individual and community measures of stress are related to the presence of depression/demoralization symptoms (Feeling Bad), to positive Wellbeing (Feeling Good) and to the combination of these two (Wellbeing), in an urban sample of 549 adults. The mediation and moderation of these effects by indicators of social support, evaluation of status, and belief variables intended to measure aspects of individual coping tendencies are examined and tested. The findings suggest the absence of moderating effects of any of the support and coping variables on each stressor or on the effects of stressors on Feeling Bad, Feeling Good, and Wellbeing. A number of the variables do, however, have significant main effects, and thus appear to operate directly on the dependent variables, regardless of the presence or level of stress. Differences between apparent effects on Feeling Good and Feeling Bad and the increase in effects for the combination measure are discussed.
ORE than 200 cases of childhood schizophrenia have been referred141 for study and treatment to the Children's Ward of Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital over a period of twelve years. The work of Bender and others has made it possible to recognize an increasing number of schizophrenic children and has provided us with more effective criteria for their differentiation from cases of mental deficiency, organic brain disease, and severe neurotic disorder. Many of these children have been followed closely for years with sustained contact with their families. As these longitudinal studies continue, we are impressed increasingly with problems presented by the parents. We have found that, despite their great need, the parents of our schizophrenic children tend not to accept help readily. They frequently come to us through necessity rather than by choice, many as a last resort. In some
conscientious intake worker at an agency to which people T come, THE or are brought for help, it must often seem that there is a special demon who arranges matters so that 1) the people his agency is best prepared to serve rarely seem to arrive a t his office; 2) those who require facilities the agency feels unable to extend do appear with annoying frequency; and 3) a number of individuals who seem to be in greatest need of the agency's assistance and might derive benefit from it cannot be helped because they perversely insist on using the agency in ways that it considers to be inappropriate or unproductive.
