frühereni Regierungsarzt in Kamerun i. V. Das Material, über das hier vorläufig referirt werden soll, gewann ich in erster Linie in Kamerun, wo ich von Anfang März 1899 bis April 1900 Regierungsarzt war; ferner in den zwei folgenden Monaten in Victoria, gelegen am Fusse des 4000 ni hohen Kamerungebirges, sodann Juni/Juli in der Colonie Togo. Dort verdanke ich die Möglichkeit für die Anstellung der Untersuchungen der Liebenswürdigkeit des dortigen Regierungsarztes Dr. B ludan, der mir sein Laboratorium zur Verfügung stellte. Schon im Jahre 1894/95 hatte ich Gelegenheit gehabt, an der westafrikanischen Küste tropenhygienische Untersuchungen anzustellen. Jede der drei erwähnten Fiebergegenden repräsentirt gewissermaassen einen Typus für sich, Kamerun den Latentund Sumpfboden, der von unzähligen, mit Brakwasser gefüllten Creeks durchschnitten ist, Victoria, eine gebirgige Uferlandschaft mit Basaltgrund, durchschnitten von einzelnen reissenden Gebirgsbächen, in den Thälern mit vereinzelten Sümpfen, in denen das Grundwasser zu Tage tritt, ferner Togo-Gegend von Klein-Popo-, eine sandige, schmale Küstenlandschaft, an der einen Seite vom Meere bespült, an der andern von einer langausgestreckten Lagune, in die mehrere Flüsse münden und deren Wassermasse daher immer in einer gewissen Bewegung ist. Der Stand des Grundwassers ist in allen drei Gegenden durchschnittlich etwa 11/4__13/4 m unter der Erdoberfläche. Die relative Feuchtigkeit ist hoch. Die Unterschiede zwischen Temperatur-Maxima und-Minima sind gering. Die Regenzeit ist in allen drei Gegenden ungefähr von April, bezw. Mai bis Mitte October. Schwankungen kommen vor. Der Bezirk Victoria hat die meisten Niederschläge, etwa 3800 mm. In Debundja, dem zweit regenreichsten Orte der Erde, erreichen die Niederschläge sogar 10 000 mm, in Kamerun etwa I) Nach einem Vortrage im Institut Pasteur, 6.
