Some fundamental elements of structuralist thinking created ample opportunity for generalization. Among those elements which should be mentioned are: first, the need for abstraction and modelling, and, second, the substitution of the essentialist view on meaning by the functionalist one. It is a well-known fact that after a while structuralist thinking gave rise to severe criticism. Here, we restrict ourselves to those critical positions which followed the cognitive turn in linguistics and literary studies, leaving aside criticism which has its basis in poststructuralist philosophy, in sociopolitical argumentation, and in historicist research traditions.Narratology has generated a considerable number of statements about the effects of various internal relations among textual elements without, however, being explicit about either the hypothetical status Poetics Today 11:2 (Summer 1990).
