JIit der vorliegenden Abhandluog beginnen wir eioe Reihe von hfitteilungen uber Verbindungen, in welchen in einen aromatischen Kern gesattigte Kohlenwasserstoffketten ein-oder mehrmals cyclisch eingreifen. Verbindungen dieser Art, mit dem einfachsten H y d r i n d e n ( 3 . ) an der Spitze, sind z. T. schon lange bekannt, im ganzen aber doch noch recht luckenhaft untersucht. Sie bieten nebst ihren Ahkijmmlingen eine Fulle ioteressanter Probleme, sowohl nach der rein chemischen, als auch nach der phpsiologischen Richtung: es sei niir an das von dialkylierten Beozolen abweichende Verhalten des Hrdrindens bei der Bromierung I ) , an die merkwiirdigen pharmakologischen Eigenschaften desac-ij-Amino-tetrahydro-naphthalins") und des /3-Amino-$-methyl-hydriodens '), an die eigeoartigen Geruchsqualitaten rnancher Hydrinden-Abkommlinge ') u.a. m. erinnert. Eine erhebliche Steigerung hat das Interesse an den or~ho-13enzo-polymethylen-Verbinduogen neuerdings dadurch noch erfahren, daB uns der Beweis der Existenzlabigkeit solchGr bicyclischer Systeme gegluckt ist, in denen eine aliphatische Kette zwei meta-Wagserstoffatome des Beozolringes ver-knupft5), denn als neues Moment taucht nunmehr auch die Frage nxch dem Verhtiltnis auf, in dem die Eigenschaften der orb-und rnuta-Doppelringe zu einander stehen werden.Das Studium der Beozo-polymethylen-Verbindungen ist heute in e i n e r Beziehung leichter als noch vor wenigen Jahren: Dank der ausgezeichneten Arbeit einer Reihe von Forschern ( P a a l , S k i t a , W i l l s t a t t e r , I p a t i e w , P a d o a , S c h r o t e r u. a.) h a t man es in der Hand, durch katalytische Wasserstoff-Zufuhr Stoffe wie Inden, Naphthalin, dcenaphthen, Fluoren halbseitig zu hydrieren und so den Benzo-polymethylen-Typus herzustellen; die friiher schwierige Frage nach der Bes'chaffung von Aiisgangsmaterial kann heute vielfach als g e l k t gelten.Rei einer genaueren Betrachtung der Substitutionsverhaltnisse in der Beozol-und Naphthalin-Reihe (das Inden scheidet leider wegen P e r k i n und Khvay, B. 26, 2251 [1893]. 2, B a m b e r g e r , B. 21, 1112 [ISS9].
