DaB sin inriiger Zusammenhang bestehen mu8 zwischen der Beschaffenheit der Ablagerungen am Meeresboden und dem Gehalte der uber denselben lagernden Wassermassen an suspendierten Korpern aller Art, ist ohne weiteres sinleuchterid und schon oft des Naheren ausgefuhrt. Auch ist bekannt, da8 von den drei Kategorien suspendierter Korper, die hier in Frage kommen, den gro8eren pelagischen Lebewesen im allgemeinen eine nur sehr geringe Bedeutung zukommt , wahrend die meist mikroskopisch kleinen, a19 Plankton bezeichneten Wssen und der Detritus einen so gro8en EinfluB auf die Sedirnentbildung am Meeresboden ausiiben, da8 man denselben geradezu als Ausschlag gebend bezeichnen mu6 Oberall wo der Detritus iib.erwiegt , also vor allem in Kiistennahe, kommen terrigene Ablagerungen zustande; wo derselbe dagegen zurucktritt, wie auf hoher See, fern jeder Kuste, entstehen die pelagischen Sedimente, in deren Substanz die Skelette oder Skelettreste der Planktonorganismen dominieren. Allerdings schwinden in den gro8ten Tiefen der Ozeane auf weite Strecken hin diese Skelette wieder mehr oder weniger vollstandig aus den Sedimenten, und es bleibt nur ein feiner, oft rot gefiirbter Ton, uber dessen Entstehung noch keine GewiBheit erreicht worden ist.
