W artykule omówiono oprawę plastyczną uroczystości funeralnych, zorganizowanych przez Michała Kazimierza Radziwiłła „Rybeńkę” z okazji egzekwii za Jakuba Ludwika Sobieskiego (syna Jana III) w Żółkwi w 1743 r. oraz pogrzebu Anny Katarzyny z Sanguszków Radziwiłłowej w Nieświeżu w 1747 r. Dekoracje obu uroczystości, należące do najbogatszych w XVIII-wiecznej Rzeczypospolitej, nie doczekały się dotąd wyczerpującego omówienia w literaturze przedmiotu, chociaż wyróżniają się bardzo rzadkim w Polsce typem architektonicznego castrum doloris. Oba katafalki, których twórcami byli Antonio Castelli i Maurizio Pedetti, nawiązując do formy rzymskiego barokowego tempietta, pozostają oryginalnymi i ważnymi przykładami europejskiej późnobarokowej sztuki funeralnej.
W artykule omówiono egzekwie odprawiane w Rzeczypospolitej za zmarłą w Dreźnie w 1757 r. królową Marię Józefę (żonę Augusta III), ze szczególnym uwzględniem ich artystycznej oprawy. Najokazalsze uroczystości, udokumentowane bogatym, w większości dotąd niepublikowanym materiałem ikonograficznym, odbyły się w 14 stycznia 1758 r. w kaplicy Saskiej w Warszawie. Siedem rysunków, zachowanych w Sächsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv w Dreźnie, rejestruje wstępne i zrealizowane wersje wystroju wnętrza świątyni. Ich autorem był najpewniej Johann Friedrich Knöbel, który w projektach castrum doloris Marii Józefy inspirował się rzymską tradycją katafalków na rzucie „molina da vento” Gian Lorenza Berniniego, funeralnymi kompozycjami Jeana Beraina st. oraz Gaetana Chiaveriego. Nie można wykluczyć, że przy projektowaniu żałobnej dekoracji kaplicy współpracował z młodym Simonem G. Zugiem. Egzekwie za Marię Józefę odbywały się do 1764 r., co świadczy o szacunku, jakim poddani darzyli tę niesłusznie pomijaną w historiografii, ostatnią koronowaną polską królową.
W artykule omówiono plastyczną oprawę egzekwii odprawionych z inicjatywy Augusta II Mocnego za Marię Kazimierę Sobieską w 1717 r. oraz uroczystości związanych z wystawieniem trumien królowej, Jana III Sobieskiego i ich wnuka, zorganizowanych przez królewicza Jakuba Sobieskiego w 1733 r. Analiza rysunków Joachima Daniela Jaucha ze zbiorów Sächsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv w Dreźnie, wsparta źródłami archiwalnymi, pozwoliła na próbę usystematyzowania bogatego materiału ikonograficznego dotyczącego projektów artysty z okazji pochówku serca Augusta II Mocnego w Kapicy Królewskiej w 1736 r., jej dekoracji oraz wystroju kościoła w czasie egzekwii za monarchę, odprawianych w rocznice jego śmierci na polecenie Augusta III przez blisko dwadzieścia pięć lat. Uroczystości te, celebrowane w jednej z najważniejszych sakralnych fundacji Jana III, były ważnym elementem saskiej propagandy politycznej.
Wystawność ceremonii pogrzebowych była jedną z cech specyficznej sarmackiej dewocji, związanej z tradycjonalizmem, prowincjonalizmem i pewną orientalizacją, które prowadziły do przesady i rozrzutności w celu osiągnięcia maksymalnego splendoru. Mimo zbieżności liturgii, podobieństw scenariuszy głównych uroczystości oraz zasadniczych elementów oprawy plastycznej, rozwijających się przede wszystkim w Italii od końca XVI w., barokowa pompa funebris w Rzeczypospolitej XVIII stulecia stała się swoistym fenomenem kulturowym na skalę europejską -sceną teatru, na której rozgrywały się długie i pełne przepychu pogrzebowe dramaty.Odmienności te dostrzegali przebywający w Polsce już w końcu XVII w. cudzoziemcy. Najciekawsze obserwacje spisał François-Paulin Dalairac (1626-1689). Francuza dziwiło, że pogrzeby, organizowane zwykle wiele miesięcy po śmierci, pochłaniają ogromne koszty, a towarzyszące uroczystościom huczne biesiady porównać można z ucztami weselnymi. Ceremonia kruszenia insygniów przy wtórze cymbałów, trąb i wystrzałów armatnich w czasie pochówków wojskowych przypominała mu karuzel, mieszaninę żałobnej celebry i imprez typu fête galante. Dalairaca zachwyciły natomiast wspaniałe katafalki i bogate wystroje kościołów, ozdabianych nie jak we Francji czernią, ale wieloma barwami z dominacją purpury 1 .W XVIII-wiecznej Rzeczpospolitej pogrzeby odbywały się średnio około pół roku po zgonie, jednak zdarzały się zarówno pochówki po kilku tygodniach, jak i po kilku latach. Opóźnienia powodować mogły niepokoje społeczno-polityczne lub sprawy rodzinne, jednak główną przyczyną był czas potrzebny na zawiadomienie i przybycie gości, których liczebność świadczyła o wielkości i popularności rodu, oraz na organizację trwającej zwykle kilka dni funeralnej pompy. Należało zapewnić kwatery i wyżywienie dla żałobników i towarzyszących im orszaków, przygotować stypy oraz wynagrodzenia dla osób duchownych, stanowiących zwykle najliczniejszą grupę uczestników ceremonii. Konieczne było ponadto uszycie odpowiednich strojów dla rodziny zmarłego i jego dworu, ozdobienie komnaty, w której umieszczano trumnę przed eksportacją, a przede wszystkim świątyni, gdzie miało się odbyć pogrzebowe theatrum, zatrudnienie w tym celu projektanta i ekipy wykonawców oraz zakupienie i zgromadzenie niezbędnych materiałów. XVIII-wieczny magnacki pochówek był więc wielkim logistycznym przedsięwzięciem, "fabryką pogrzebową", angażującą setki osób, wydarzeniem aktywizującym -co warto podkreślić -ekonomicznie całą okolicę, przenoszącym mody i moduły kulturowe oraz wzory artystyczne. Była to okazja do zarobku dla kupców, kramarzy, właścicieli zajazdów, rzemieślników najróżniejszych specjalności, dla pospólstwa nagradzanego jałmużną, uboższych oraz zamożniejszych, spodziewających się swoistej rozrywki koligatów i znajomych, a także hojnie "regalizowanego" duchowieństwa.
