This paper reports the students’ needs in developing a GME instructional course with the following research questions: 1) What is the present level of students’ oral communication apprehension? 2) What are the students’ needs (the learning and the language needs) in learning General Maritime English? The research was conducted at the Akademi Maritim Akademi Indonesia AIPI Makassar. There were 150 students of the nautical department in the academic year 2016-2017 as the primary subjects of this research. The researchers administered questionnaires, conducted interviews and observed exams to collect the data. The results found that the students’ level of oral communication apprehension was high, based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). It was also found that there was a high demand for materials that could prepare the students to have good communication skills, in order to be equipped to work in international maritime industries. Most of the students assumed that the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in English are crucial, but they placed productive skills (writing and speaking) as their highest priority. It is concluded that the results of this investigation should be taken into account in developing teaching and learning materials for maritime academy students.
This study aims to determine whether the Vocab-O-Gram strategy can increase students' vocabulary. This study's methodology is pre-experimental. In this situation, the aforementioned strategy assisted the students in enhancing their motivation to lift new vocabulary. Students at class science II (two) SMA Bajiminasa Makassar as the population in this research. 20 students participated in the study's sample, which was created using a representative sampling technique in which only a small number of students were selected as the study's potential subjects. The data in question was then examined in the percentage format, along with ratio and percentage analysis and t-test. The results of the data analysis show that there are differences between the two tests namely the pre-test and post-test, which are distinguished by the fact that the test taken after the first one is larger than the test taken before it (8.35 > 6.05). The t-test result was more significant than the t-table result (22.11 > 2.039) at the significance level of 0.05 per cent. The data that was obtained by the researchers and entered into the table shows that the ratio of the initial rate to the final rate is larger. It can be inferred that the Vocab-O-Gram strategy was successful in raising the test scores of the second-grade students at SMA Bajiminasa Makassar.
Teaching English is very difficult and it is not an easy job. It is different from another subject as it is not our language. In teaching English, the English teacher should have some strategies and they are supposed to build up the students’ motivation, help and mediate the students with some strategies, techniques, and also method of learning therefore they can reach the language development. The research design described through descriptive as the result taken from observation, interview, and documentation. The result of this research finds that the teachers develop their strategy with instructional material and the students have good response towards the strategy.
The goal of this study is to determine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. To investigate the impact of the story face strategy and the concept mapping strategy on second grade students' reading comprehension at senior high school. This is an experimental study with a pre test and post test design. The research sample consisted of second grade students (2 Sains classes) during the academic year 2018/2019, and the purposive sampling technique was used. The effect of Story Face Strategy and Concept Mapping Strategy toward reading comprehension based on the data indicates that there was significant effect between data in pre-test and data taken from post-test of the students' achievement. The value of the test was highly significant showed as 19.088 and the t-table was showed as 2.093. The value score of t-test was quite higher than the t-table (19.088 2.093). It is concluded that the Story Face Strategy and Concept Mapping Strategy are effective in teaching reading skill to senior high school second grade students.
The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not using the Cornell note-taking method improves students' reading comprehension while they are enrolled in the first grade at MA-Al Hidayah. In this study, a pre-experimental research design was used, and participants in one group had a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The overall sample size was thirty students, and the approach utilized was called purposive sampling. This study made use of a multiple-choice questionnaire as its tool. The findings of this study indicate that the pre-test mean score for students was 54.38, but that it increased to 79.06 after the intervention. It is possible to draw the conclusion that the students' reading comprehension increased, and this indicates that using the Cornel Note Taking approach led to an increase in the students' reading comprehension.
