Oral communication is essential for people's workplace performance as well as for university students learning English. Speaking fluently is also crucial for maritime academy students prepared to work in industries abroad. Students need to believe in their ability to speak English. For this reason, sound communication skills are necessary for maritime students so they can compete with seafarer or sailor from other countries. The purpose of this research was to identify the level of oral communication apprehension of nautical students of Akademi Maritim Indonesia (Indonesian Maritime Academy) AIPI Makassar. The sample consisted of 10 first year students at nautical of AMI AIPI Makassar. Data was gathered through questionnaires adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Class Scale (FLCAS). The findings indicated that students were generally apprehensive in EFL oral communication. The students showed the highest apprehension for public speaking. The level of nautical students' apprehension based on observation and supported by the modified FLCAS were 20% in the low category, 60% in the moderate category, and 20% in the high category. Students in the high apprehension category showed more symptoms than students in the moderate and low apprehension categories.
Abstract-This study has five main purposes (1) to investigate the effectiveness of Cooperative Learning (CL) strategy through English Village (EC) for teaching speaking in communicative language function (2) to investigate the effectiveness of teaching speaking in transactional language function (3) to know the significance change on self confidence after being taught through English Village EV using CL strategy. (4) to know the significance change on self interest (5) to know the significance change on self regulation. The study was experimental by using one-group pretest-posttest design. The target population of this study was, in fact, is all students of English education department of private university or colleges in Indonesia. However, while the accessible population was only students of English department at the Islamic university of Kalimantan. The result of dependent t-test turned out to confirm that CL strategy through EV is effective to teach speaking skill for both, communicative and academic language function. The result of Wilcoxon test turn out to confirm that CL strategy through English is in significance change of the students' internal factors.Index Terms-cooperative learning strategy, English village, communicative and academic language function of speaking
This paper reports the students’ needs in developing a GME instructional course with the following research questions: 1) What is the present level of students’ oral communication apprehension? 2) What are the students’ needs (the learning and the language needs) in learning General Maritime English? The research was conducted at the Akademi Maritim Akademi Indonesia AIPI Makassar. There were 150 students of the nautical department in the academic year 2016-2017 as the primary subjects of this research. The researchers administered questionnaires, conducted interviews and observed exams to collect the data. The results found that the students’ level of oral communication apprehension was high, based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). It was also found that there was a high demand for materials that could prepare the students to have good communication skills, in order to be equipped to work in international maritime industries. Most of the students assumed that the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in English are crucial, but they placed productive skills (writing and speaking) as their highest priority. It is concluded that the results of this investigation should be taken into account in developing teaching and learning materials for maritime academy students.
The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in English language educational settings often improves teaching and learning (Tinio, 2016). English language teaching and technology have been seen as interesting new research era. This article reviewed studies on ICT integration in teaching from ten different countries. The aim of this review is to analyze cross cultural findings in order to determine what factors might be best applied to the Indonesia situation to improve English language learning and teaching as well as types of technology might be best adopted for ELT improvement. The articles for the study were found through internet search engine, Google scholar and ERIC in the area of technology integration and technology tools in English language teaching. Thus, the data taken is carefully investigated using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The result of analysis showed that the integration of technology in teaching can improve the experience for students and teachers and improve learning for students.
This research was intended to investigate the problems in professional competence faced by the English teachers of vocational high schools in Gowa, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using three instruments: questionnaire, interview and observation checklist. The participants were two experienced English teachers, two inexperienced English teachers, and eight students. The professional competence indicators are adapted from the Regulation of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 16/2007. The results of this research reveal that the teachers' problems dealing with professional competence in teaching English at vocational high schools include (a) problem in mastering the materials, (b) problems in mastering the curriculum, (c) problem in developing materials creatively, (d) difficulties in developing the teacher professionalism continuously, (e) problems in using the information technology and (f) problems of classroom management.
