These findings suggest that temporal lobe abnormalities are present at the first hospitalization for schizophrenia and that low volume of the left posterior superior temporal gyrus gray matter is specific to schizophrenia compared with affective disorder.

Mismatch negativity was reduced in schizophrenia, especially in the left hemisphere. This finding is consistent with abnormalities of primary or adjacent auditory cortex involved in auditory sensory or echoic memory.

The observed number of patients was moderately large, thus indicating a high incidence of cutaneous tuberculosis in Larkana. Lupus vulgaris, a form of cutaneous tuberculosis, was widespread in this area and prevalent in adults, while scrofuloderma was prevalent in children. Moreover, the existing rate of the disease was higher in children aged under 10 years and lower in adults. This indicates that children are more prone to this disease than adults.

There have been no large-scale epidemiological studies of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype distribution of common warts in Japan. A total of 213 patients with common warts (104 males and 109 females) in Japan were studied to detect HPV genotype distribution by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing analysis. The results were as follows: 94 HPV-1a (44.1%), 35 HPV-4 (16.4%), 30 HPV-65 (14.1%), 13 HPV-27 (6.1%), 13 HPV-2a (6.1%), 9 HPV-57b (4.22%), 3 HPV-16 (1.41%), 2 HPV-6a (0.94%), 2 HPV-63 (0.94%), and 1 case for each of HPV-3, -5, -5b, -7, -10, -21, -29, -47, -56, -57, -62, and -92 (0.47%, respectively). Four cases (1.88%) were found in which two different HPV types were detected within the lesions: one case of HPV-1a with HPV-16, one case of HPV-1a with HPV-65, one case of HPV-6a with HPV-8, and one case of HPV-65 with HPV-16. There were seven cases of mucosal types (3.3%), that is, two HPV-6a, three HPV-16, one HPV-56, and one HPV-62, and three cases of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV)-related types (1.41%), that is, one HPV-5, one HPV-5b (both of which belonged to a high-risk group), and one HPV-47 (which belonged to a low-risk group). To date, this is the largest sequencing-based study of HPV for common warts in Japan. It is said that common warts are induced predominantly by HPV-2, -27, and -57 in European population. However, the present results showed that in Japan they were induced mostly by HPV-1, -4, and -65. This suggests that regional differences in HPV genotype distribution may exist between European and Japanese populations.

The CYP2D6*10(*10) allele that causes decreased CYP2D6 activity is present in Asians with a high frequency of approximately 50%. We studied the effects of the *10 allele on the steady-state plasma concentrations of aripiprazole and its active metabolite, dehydroaripiprazole. The subjects were 63 Japanese patients with schizophrenia who had only the wild-type or *10 alleles. Twenty-seven patients were homozygous for the wild-type allele, 31 were heterozygous, and five were homozygous for the *10 allele. All patients had been receiving the fixed doses of aripiprazole for at least 2 weeks. The daily doses were 24 mg (n = 40) and 12 mg (n = 23). No other drugs except biperiden and flunitrazepam were coadministered. Plasma concentrations of aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole were measured using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The mean ± standard deviation values of concentration/dose ratios of aripiprazole in the patients with zero, one, and two *10 alleles were 9.0 ± 2.9, 12.7 ± 4.4, and 19.0 ± 6.8 ng/mL/mg, respectively, and those values for dehydroaripiprazole were 4.9 ± 1.6, 5.9 ± 1.7, and 5.9 ± 1.9 ng/mL/mg, respectively. The respective values for the sum of aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole were 13.9 ± 4.3, 18.6 ± 5.9, and 24.6 ± 8.5 ng/mL/mg. The mean concentration/dose ratios of aripiprazole were significantly (P < 0.01 or P < 0.001) different among the three genotype groups. The values for the sum of aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole were significantly higher in patients with one (P < 0.01) and two (P < 0.001) *10 alleles compared with those with zero *10 alleles. This study suggests that the *10 allele plays an important role in controlling the steady-state plasma concentrations of aripiprazole and the sum of aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole in Asian subjects.

Aims:The authors investigated the correlation between prolactin concentrations during aripiprazole treatment and various factors, including age, sex, plasma concentrations of aripiprazole and its active metabolite, dehydroaripiprazole, and genetic polymorphisms of dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) and cytochrome P450(CYP)2D6. Methods:The subjects were 70 inpatients with schizophrenia (36 men and 34 women), receiving fixed doses of aripiprazole (24 mg in 45 cases and 12 mg in 25 cases) for periods of between 2 and 30 weeks. Prolactin concentrations were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Plasma concentrations of aripiprazole and dehydroaripiprazole were measured using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The genotypes of Taq1A, -141C Ins/Del DRD2 and CYP2D6 were detected by polymerase chain reaction methods.Results: Prolactin concentrations were significantly higher in women than in men (8.9 Ϯ 7.5 vs 3.4 Ϯ 3.0 ng/mL, P < 0.001). No correlations were found between prolactin concentrations and plasma concentrations of aripiprazole, dehydroaripiprazole or the sum of the two compounds. Prolactin concentrations were not affected by any polymorphism. Conclusion:The present study suggests that only sex plays a significant role in prolactin concentrations during aripiprazole treatment.

An extensive survey of problems encountered by foreign students of the University of the Ryukyus and the resulting levels of stress was carried out in order to determine the main stressors hindering academic progress and personal adjustment. Subjectively perceived stress levels after arrival in Japan were obtained from 134 subjects through a comprehensive questionnaire for reporting speci®c stressors. The 30-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) was included to assess mental health state. Differences in scores by area of origin were also determined for the total GHQ scores and its sub-scales. The GHQ results showed that regardless of length of time in Japan, more than 60% of the subjects scored within a range usually indicative of a mental health risk. Mean scores by area of origin showed a 50% reduction over time for non-Chinese Asians and North American/ Europeans, but only a reduction of 1.1% or less for Chinese, Latin American, Middle/Near Eastern and African subjects. Limitations in achievement of academic goals were reported by the greatest number of students as causing moderate to excessive stress (57.5%); most frequently reported causes were language inadequacy (55.2%), reference materials unavailable (34.3%), unfamiliarity with Japanese study methods (32.1%), and inadequate guidance from teachers/advisors (26.9%). Various social, personal and daily life problems in the non-academic setting were also reported as causing high stress levels. Most of the stressors identi®ed are not considered inevitable and point toward directions to pursue in preventive strategies in mitigating psychological distress and maladjustment of students.
