Repeated exposure to olfactory ligands (odorants) increased peripheral olfactory sensitivity in mice. For two unrelated ligands, androstenone and isovaleric acid, induction of olfactory sensitivity was odorant-specific and occurred only in inbred strains that initially had low sensitivity to the exposure odorant. These data demonstrate stimulus-induced plasticity in a sensory receptor cell, suggesting a form of stimulus-controlled gene expression. Induction with two unrelated odorants implies that olfactory induction is a general phenomenon that may occur in a large fraction of the human population.

Rosin is an abundantly available natural product. The characteristic fused ring structure of rosin acids is analogous to that of some aromatic compounds in rigidity, and makes rosin and its derivatives potential substitutes for those aromatic compounds. In the study reported, the synthesis of biobased curing agents containing imide structure using rosin and the cure reaction were investigated. Rosin‐based imidoamine‐type curing agents were synthesized, and the chemical structure was confirmed using 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared and electrospray ionization spectroscopy. The curing behavior with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal mechanical properties and thermal stability of the cured epoxy resins were evaluated using dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetry, respectively. The results indicate that the curing behavior of the rosin‐based curing agents is similar to that of curing agents with analogous structures. Cured products have good thermal stability due to the presence of the imide group and the bulky hydrogenated phenanthrene ring structure. Rosin acids have a great potential in the synthesis of epoxy curing agents as replacements for some of the current commercial aromatic or cycloaliphatic analogues. The goose is an economically important waterfowl that exhibits unique characteristics and abilities, such as liver fat deposition and fibre digestion. Here, we report de novo whole-genome assemblies for the goose and swan goose and describe the evolutionary relationships among 7 bird species, including domestic and wild geese, which diverged approximately 3.4~6.3 million years ago (Mya). In contrast to chickens as a proximal species, the expanded and rapidly evolving genes found in the goose genome are mainly involved in metabolism, including energy, amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism. Further integrated analysis of the host genome and gut metagenome indicated that the most widely shared functional enrichment of genes occurs for functions such as glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, starch and sucrose metabolism, propanoate metabolism and the citrate cycle. We speculate that the unique physiological abilities of geese benefit from the adaptive evolution of the host genome and symbiotic interactions with gut microbes.

Reprogramming of metabolism is described in many types of cancer and is associated with the clinical outcomes. However, the prognostic significance of pyrimidine metabolism signaling pathway in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is unclear. Using the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets, we found that the pyrimidine metabolism signaling pathway was significantly enriched in LUAD. Compared with normal lung tissues, the pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes were highly expressed in lung tumor tissues. The high expression levels of pyrimidine metabolic–rate limiting enzymes were associated with unfavorable prognosis. However, purinergic receptors P2RX1, P2RX7, P2RY12, P2RY13, and P2RY14 were relatively downregulated in lung cancer tissues and were associated with favorable prognosis. Moreover, we found that hypo-DNA methylation, DNA amplification, and TP53 mutation were contributing to the high expression levels of pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes in lung cancer cells. Furthermore, combined pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes had significant prognostic effects in LUAD. Comprehensively, the pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes were highly expressed in bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer. And the high expression levels of pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes were associated with unfavorable prognosis in liver cancer. Overall, our results suggested the mRNA levels of pyrimidine metabolic rate–limiting enzymes CAD, DTYMK, RRM1, RRM2, TK1, TYMS, UCK2, NR5C2, and TK2 were predictive of lung cancer as well as other cancers.
