Objetivo: Verificar se há relação entre o tipo e nível de lesão com a funcionalidade para atividades de vida diária e na qualidade de vida (QV) desses indivíduos nos primeiros meses de lesão. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 17 indivíduos internados no Hospital de Apoio de Brasília, divididos em grupos de acordo com o nível e tipo da lesão pela classificação ASIA, aplicada na admissão dos pacientes. A avaliação funcional foi coletada a partir da versão brasileira da Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM III) e a QV, avaliada pela World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref). Resultados: Não houve relação significativa entre funcionalidade e QV, mas houve maior funcionalidade no grupo de paraplegia. Em relação ao WHOQOL-bref, apenas o domínio psicológico apresentou alteração, verificando maior QV nas lesões incompletas e nos tetraplégicos. Houve correlações negativas entre função e QV nas facetas do trabalho, vida sexual e moradia. Conclusão: Os indivíduos nos primeiros meses de lesão apresentam uma autopercepção limitada quanto à sua nova condição e estado de saúde.
