We demonstrate here the rational design strategy to control the length of 1-dimensional beta-sheet peptide nanoassembly. We synthesized the beta-sheet peptides with attached coils and carbohydrates. We reasoned that the bulkiness of the coils affects the final length of the assembled beta-sheet peptide nanostructures because of the steric crowding effect. The nanostructure from the peptide with a small and linear coil was several micrometers long, whereas the one from the peptide with a high-volume-fraction dendritic coil was only about 150 nm long. For potential biological applications of the peptide nanoassemblies, we investigated the interactions of the carbohydrate-coated nanoassemblies with E. coli cells containing cognate binding proteins. The results showed that both of the nanoassemblies could immobilize and/or aggregate bacterial cells. The degrees of immobilization were similar for both nanoassemblies; however, only the long nanoribbon was shown to induce the formation of bacterial clusters.

Solid scrolls are reversibly formed by self‐assembly of rod‐shaped molecules with laterally attached coil units, in contrast to the layered structures formed from self‐assembly of planar molecules. As described by M. Lee and co‐workers in their Communication on the core structure of the scrolls, which are either filled cylinders or hollow tubes, can be controlled by variation of the length of the coil unit. The cover picture shows aligned tubular scrolls displaying well‐defined in‐plane ordering of the rod segments.

On a roll: Attachment of flexible coils to the middle of a rigid rod generates T-shaped rod-coil molecules that self-assemble into layers that roll up to form filled cylindrical and hollow tubular scrolls, depending on the coil length, in the solid state (see picture); the rods are arranged parallel to the layer plane.

Aufgerollt wie ein Teppich: Durch Anbringen flexibler Knäuel an den Mittelteil starrer stabförmiger Moleküle entstehen T‐förmige Stab‐Knäuel‐Konstrukte, die selbstorganisierte Schichten aufbauen. Feste Rollen bilden sich reversibel durch Selbstorganisation stabförmiger Moleküle, an die seitlich knäuelförmige Einheiten angebracht sind, im Unterschied zu Schichtstrukturen, die durch Selbstorganisation planarer Moleküle entstehen. Wie M. Lee et al. in der Zuschrift auf schildern, lässt sich die Kernstruktur der Rollen, die entweder gefüllten Zylindern oder hohlen Röhren entsprechen, durch Variation der Länge der Knäuel‐Einheit steuern. Das Titelbild zeigt ausgerichtete röhrenförmige Rollen mit wohldefinierter Ordnung der Stabsegmente innerhalb einer Ebene.
