Quelques données sociolinguistiques sur l'Algérie Nul ne peut nier la complexité et la diversité de la réalité linguistique en Algérie. Sa réalité permet de montrer l'existence d'une configuration linguistique quadridimensionnelle se composant essentiellement de l'arabe algérien, l'arabe classique, le français et le berbère. La diversité linguistique, pour John GUMPERZ « est plus qu'une simple affaire de comportement: c'est une ressource communicative dans la vie quotidienne. » (1981 : 27). Les Algériens traduisent la réalité de leur vie quotidienne en tirant profit de toutes les possibilités que leur offre cette réalité dans sa pluralité et sa diversité. Le multilinguisme en Algérie, s'organise autour de quatre langues présentes sur le marché linguistique. Le paysage linguistique algérien se compose essentiellement et fondamentalement de l'arabe algérien (qui est lui-même divisé en plusieurs variétés régionales), du berbère et de l'arabe classique ou conventionnel (pour l'usage de l'officialité). A tout cela s'ajoute la langue française (première langue étrangère). Ce « carré magique des langues » (Taleb Ibrahimi. Kh., 1997 : 96) constitue pour l'Algérie un cas de plurilinguisme où l'arabe parlé ou dialectal est la langue véhiculaire de tout le pays, c'est la langue
