Diatom, macrofossil, pollen, Pediastrum and biogenic silica analyses were carried out on an 1 --m sediment sequence from the Danish lake Dallund S0, demonstrating major changes in the aquatic ecosystem over the last 7000 years. A diatom-phosphorus calibration model was applied to the fossil diatom record to reconstruct in-lake total phosphorus (TP) concentrations over this period. Prior to the introduction of agriculture to the region, c. 6000 years ago, the lake was relatively deep and had low diatom-inferred TP concentrations (c. 20 jg TP/L), with limited macrophyte growth. Moderate nutrient enrichment of the lake was inferred during the Bronze Age (1700-500 Bc) and Iron Age (500 BC -AD 1050) periods and evidence for water-level lowering was observed. Marked eutrophication of the lake (reconstructed TP levels consistently > 100 gg/L) was associated with major changes in agriculture during the Mediaeval period (AD 1050-1536) and continued to the present day. These data document the long-term anthropogenic impact on Dallund S0, a lake in an area with a long history of human activity.
Individual plant care may well become embodied in precision farming in the future and will lead to new opportunities in agricultural crop management. The objective of this project was to develop and evaluate a data logging system attached to a precision seeder to enable high accuracy seed position mapping of a field of sugar beet. A Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK GPS), optical seed detectors and a data logging system were retrofitted on to a precision seeder to map the seeds as they were planted. The average error between the seed map and the actual plant map was about 16-43 mm depending on vehicle speed and seed spacing. The results showed that the overall accuracy of the estimated plant positions was acceptable for the guidance of vehicles and implements as well as potential individual plant treatments.
The molluscicidal principles of Ethulia conyzoides were identified as ethuliacoumarin A (1) and isoethuliacoumarin A (2). Ethuliacoumarin A possessed an LC90 between 19 and 23.5 ppm depending on the age of the snail against Biomphalaria glabrata, and between 12 and 15 ppm against Bulinus truncatus. In addition, ethuliacoumarin A was found to be cercaricidal at 25 ppm and ovicidal. Ethuliacoumarin has the structural requirements considered essential for anticoagulant activity. Consequently the anticoagulant dicumarol (4) was tested and found to be molluscicidal in the range from 2.5 to 10 ppm. In contrast, the coumarin anticoagulant warfarin (3) did not show molluscicidal activity.
