Es werden die mi~tleren Massendefekte der schweren Atomkerne in einer N~-herung berechnet, welohe um einen Sehritt fiber die Thomas-Fermi-Methode hinausgeht. Da die in dieser N{~herung gewonnenen Massendefekte sehr Viel niiher an den empirlschen liegen, als die aus der Thomas-Fermi-Methode erhaltenen, kSnnen die Ergebnlsse dieser Arbeit als Argument ffir die neuen Annahmen fiber die Kernkr~fte gelten, welche yon Breit, Condon, Present, F e e n b e r g 1) und V o 1 z ~) vorgesohlagen wurden. Fragestellung.Es sell in dieser Arbeit auf Grund der mittleren Massendefekte der sehweren Atomkerne die Frage untersucht werden, inwieweit man davon spreehen kann, dab im schweren Kern eine Struktur aus cr ausgebildet ist, oder dal~ sieh die Neutronen und Protonen ungeordnet durcheinander bewegen. Die erste Annahme besagt, dab nut solche Konfigurationen der Kernkorpuskeln wahrscheinlieh sind, in denen je vier Teflchen nahe beieinander liegen, w{ihrend die zweite Vorstellung behauptet, dab die Wahrseheinlichkeitsfunktion des Kerns die einzelnen Teilehen als unabh~ngige Faktoren eines (antisymmetrisierten) Produktes enth~It.Diese Frage kSnnen wir nach der Quantentheorie in das Wellenbild fibersetzen, in welehem wit den Kern als eine kontinuierliehe Massenverteilung beschreiben, die aus Wellen ira dreidimensionalen Raum aufgebaut wird. Im Wellenbild bedeutet die Annahme, der Kern sei eine Flfissigkeit aus unabhangigen Protonen und Neutronen, dab es geniigt, den Erwartungsweft der Massendichte an jeder Stelle im Kern zu betrachten, w~ihrend die entgegengesetzte Annahme der Ausbildung einer ~-Teilehenstruktur besagt, dab es aueh wesentlich auf die Sehwankungen der Dichte um ihren Erwartungswert ankommt. Wegen der atomistisehen Struktur des Kerns wird ja die Masse in einem kleinen Teilvolumen einmal ein l~roton mehr und einmal eins weniger en~halten, d. h. sie wird urn ihren Mittelwert schwanken. Und um so mehr ~ird sie sehwanken, wenn sieh die elementaren Massen infolge ihrer Weehselwirkung zu Gruppen von j e vieren zusammonsetflieBen, weft sich dann einmal ein ganzes ~-Teilcl~en mehr und einmal eins weniger in dem betrachteten Volumen befindet. 1) G.
