Introduction Cigarette smoking is highly prevalent among men. Many studies have evaluated the effect of cigarette smoking on levels of male reproductive hormones; however, the findings still remain controversial. Aim To evaluate the influence of cigarette smoking on serum levels of total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), bioavailable testosterone (BT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Methods A total of 255 men (90 smokers and 165 nonsmokers), aged 30 to 70 years, were investigated. Weight and height were obtained and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Also, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured and waist-to-hip ratio was obtained. Fasting blood samples were drawn for determination of plasmatic glucose levels and serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), triglycerides, albumin, prolactin, TT, SHBG, LH, and FSH. The values of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were determined by Friedwald equation and the values of FT and BT were calculated from TT, SHBG, and albumin. Statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05. Main Outcome Measures The influence of smoking on levels of TT, FT, and BT. Results No significant difference was observed in the mean values of TT (P = 0.580), FT (P = 0.869), BT (P = 0.933), SHBG (P = 0.279), LH (P = 0.573), and FSH (P = 0.693) in the different levels of pack-years when compared to nonsmokers. Moreover, after multivariate logistic regression, no association between increased pack-years of smoking and increased odds ratio for occurrence of low hormones and SHBG levels was observed. Conclusion In this study, smokers and nonsmokers had similar mean values of androgens, gonadotropins and SHBG. However, it is necessary to standardize pack-years of smoking in order to elucidate the influence of cigarette smoking on sex hormone levels, as well as to minimize differences among studies and to confirm our results.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The anti-GAD (glutamic acid decarboxylase) antibody is considered to be an important marker for type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1), with frequency that varies depending on the population studied and the duration of the disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the frequency of this autoantibody in a group of patients in southern Brazil with DM1 that had been diagnosed more than three years previously. DESIGN AND SETTING: Analytical cross-sectional study with a control group conducted at the Biomedicine Laboratory of Universidade Feevale. METHODS: This study was conducted between June 2007 and December 2008, and 109 individuals were enrolled during this period. Fifty-eight were DM1 patients and 51 were individuals free from DM1 and without any history of diabetes, who constituted the control group. RESULTS: In the DM1 group, the mean age was 27 ± 1.7 years and 50% were men. The mean fasting blood glucose in the DM1 group was 208 ± 15 mg/dl and mean HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) was 8.7 ± 0.25%. In the control group, the mean fasting blood glucose and HbA1c were 82 mg/dl and 5.0% respectively. Thirty-seven individuals with DM1 (63.8%) were positive for anti-GAD, and this proportion was significantly larger than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: These results show the high prevalence of anti-GAD in the population of diabetic patients in southern Brazil, thus indicating that the antibody was still present a long time after the disease had been diagnosed.

Introdução: O processo inflamatório desempenha um importante papel na etiologia das doenças cardiovasculares. Muitos estudos demonstram que níveis elevados de proteína C-reativa (PCR), uma proteína hepática de fase aguda, estão associados ao risco de tais eventos. Objetivos: Investigar a existência de associação entre PCR e fatores de risco cardiovascular em mulheres idosas. Material e método: Foram realizadas avaliações antropométricas, impedanciometria, verificação de pressão arterial, mensurações de perfil lipídico, glicemia em jejum e PCR. Resultados: Observou-se que a PCR esteve relacionada com índice de massa corporal (p = 0,001) e com percentual de gordura corporal (p = 0,015), não apresentando relação significativa com nenhuma outra variável estudada. Discussão: A associação entre PCR e marcadores de obesidade é consenso na literatura, podendo, no entanto, não significar verdadeira progressão da aterosclerose ou de um estado inflamatório. Em relação à inexistência de associação com os demais fatores de risco cardiovascular observada neste estudo, os dados encontrados são conflitantes. Há autores que indicam a correlação entre PCR e tais fatores; outros apontam sua inexistência. An analysis on the species richness distribution of marine sharks and batoids for the Colombian Caribbean and Pacific regions was carried out. A total of 138 species was documented in nearby marine waters off Colombia, including 76 sharks and 62 batoids; 20 species occurred on both coasts with the Caribbean generally having a higher observed richness than the Pacific. The Caribbean had high richness values both in the insular as well as in the northern region. However, the highest richness values per spatial unit in the Pacific islands of Gorgona and Malpelo, with completeness richness estimate represented mostly by values below 90%. Richness estimators showed values higher than the observed richness, indicating that the inventories and the description of marine shark and batoid richness in Colombia are still incomplete. Despite this, the results of this study are relevant to make decisions aimed at the conservation of this taxonomic group, both in marine protected and unprotected areas of the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Colombia
