Neste artigo é descrito um sistema de pasteurização automático cujos critérios básicos de projeto foram: ausência da produção de trihalometanos; geração local de energia térmica e elétrica; preservação do bioma local (a caatinga); tecnologia de automação; baixo custo de manutenção e construção. O protótipo construído consiste de um sistema solar térmico para tratamento microbiológico da água com um pequeno sistema fotovoltaico para suprimento de eletricidade, somente para o sistema de controle. Esse equipamento mostrou-se capaz de pasteurizar a água por bateladas, em intervalos de tempo pré-programados. De acordo com portaria no 518 do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil (2005), o resultado das análises bacteriológicas antes do tratamento mostrou um alto nível de contaminação por bactérias do grupo coliformes, inclusive a presença de Escherichia coli. Após os tratamentos, as amostras encontraram-se totalmente negativas para ambos os microrganismos.
