We investigated the effects of bacterial vaginosis (BV) on the outcomes of high-risk human papillomavirus infection (HR-HPV). BV was diagnosed on Papanicolaou-stained cytology slides of 707 HPV-positive patients. HR-HPV DNA expression was analysed using the Hybrid Capture II (HC-II) assay. Of the 707 HR-HPV-positive female patients, 298 (42.1%) exhibited clearance of HR-HPV. The remaining 409 patients had persistent HR-HPV infection. The persistent HR-HPV group and the clearing group had similar rates of BV at the beginning of the study. At the end of the study, the persistent HR-HPV group had a BV prevalence of 11.2% while the clearing group had a significant lower BV prevalence of 5.0%. A decreased clearance of HPV was found in women with current BV, compared with women without BV. Furthermore, the natural history of HPV was not affected by the HPV viral load or the BV prevalence at the beginning of the study (P > 0.05). Bacterial vaginosis appears conducive to the persistence of HPV infection.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of light intensity on growth, anti-stress ability, and immune function of yellow feathered broilers. A total of 480 one-day-old male Lingnan yellow feathered broilers were randomly allocated to 4 treatments based on light intensity (1, 5, 20 and 80 lx) with 8 replicates of 15 chicks each. The experiment lasted for 63 days. Compared with those under high light intensity, broilers exposed to low light intensity had higher (p<0.05) total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), a-Naphthylacetate esterase (ANAE +), antibody titer, but lower (p<0.05) malonaldehyde (MDA) levels and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H/L). There was a linear effect for T-AOC(p=0.002), GSH-Px(p≤0.047), MDA (p=0.003), H/L(p≤0.014), ANAE + (p≤0.044), and antibody titer (p≤0.021) with T-AOC, GSH-Px, ANAE + , and antibody titer increased significantly as light intensity decreased, whereas MDA and H/L were decreased with the decrease in light intensity. These results suggested that broilers under low light intensity could have similar performance, better anti-stress ability, stronger immune function, and more efficient in energy usage as compared with those exposed to high light intensity environment.
Cerebral infarction will cause ischemic encephalopathy and lactate accumulation in the brain in acute cerebral infarction. This study investigated the optimization of pulse sequences for lactate detection and its diagnostic value in acute cerebral infarction using proton MR spectroscopy ((1)H MRS). The studies were performed on a phantom and on 17 patients with acute cerebral infarction. Examinations were performed with a GE 1.5T MRI system (Signa). The spectra were obtained using both PRESS and STEAM sequences. The spectra were processed using a GE Advantage workstation (ADW 4.3). Moreover, the optimal sequence combined with other sequences, including conventional MRI sequences and MR DWI, were used to acquire proton MRI data for 17 patients with acute cerebral infarction and 20 healthy volunteers. The maximum lactate peaks using TE=135 ms were down doublet whereas the peaks using 270 ms were up doublet. Lactate peaks were ascending in 17 patients with cerebral infarction. Optimized (1)H MRS sequences are useful for better detection of lactate in acute cerebral infarction.
Purpose: To demonstrate the discrepancy of cerebral blood flow volume (BFV) estimation with 2D phase-contrast (2D PC) MRA guided with 3D time-of-flight (3D TOF) MR localization by using an "internal" standard. Materials and methods: 20 groups of the common (CCA), internal (ICA), and external (ECA) carotid arteries in 10 healthy subjects were examined with 2D PC MRA guided by 3D TOF MR angiograms. The sum BFV of the internal and external carotid arteries was then compared with the ipsilateral common carotid artery flow. An accurate technique would demonstrate no difference. The difference was therefore a measure of accuracy of the method. Results: 3D TOF MRA localization is presented to allow the determination of a slice orientation to improve the accuracy of 2D PC MRA in estimate the BFV. By using the combined protocols, there was better correlation in BFV estimate between the sum of ICA+ECA with the ipsilateral CCA (R 2 = 0.729, P = 0.000). The inconsistency (mean SD) was found to be 6.95 5.95% for estimate the BFV in ICA+ECA and ipsilateral CCA. The main inconsistency was contributed to the ECA and its branches. Conclusions: Guided with 3D TOF MRA localization, 2D PC MRA is more accurate in the determination of blood flow volume in the carotid arteries.
