Este artículo trata algunos aspectos relacionados con el uso ritual de los incensarios compuestos de Palenque. Además de señalar su función específica y su imporrancia dentro de las ceremonias religiosas, propone nuevas interprecaciones sobre las connotaciones simbólicas de los incensarios compuestos como imágenes de la ceiba cósmica y por lo tanto como ejes de comunicación con los dioses y los antepasados.
Este libro ofrece una nueva visión del discurso histórico del período maya Clásico a través de las narrativas de Palenque, una de las capitales más cultas y prósperas de la época. Uno de los temas que se analizan, particularmente polémico, está relacionado con la edad que las inscripciones glíficas atribuyen al célebre gobernante K'inich Janaab Pakal, que, en términos estrictamente epigráficos, muestra rasgos de indudable artificialidad. Los cronistas y cronólogos del señorío de Baakal diseñaron arreglos calendáricos que relacionaban diversos acontecimientos míticos e históricos, con la intención de mostrar que los gobernantes terrenales emulaban acciones míticas de los dioses o sucesos históricos de sus antepasados. El caso de Pakal es solo un ejemplo del tipo de argumentaciones calendáricas que, con inusitada frecuencia, se presentan en los textos señoriales de Palenque. Este libro expone los conceptos, recursos cronológicos y valores idiosincráticos, que articularon algunas crónicas de la dinastía de Lakamha', los cuales se apartan sustancialmente de nuestros modernos criterios de historicidad.
La riqueza pictórica mural de la civilización maya se ha conservado escasamente, debido en gran medida a la intensa humedad y a otros factores climáticos propios de la selva tropical. Sin embargo, todavía es posible observar ejemplos de ese tipo de arte en distintos sitios, entre los que destacan Bonampak, Tikal, Calakmul, Chacmultún, Chichén Itzá, Palenque, San Bartolo y Tulum, entre otros. En esos casos es evidente que los mayas de ayer plasmaron eventos, deidades y personajes relevantes mediante una serie de pigmentos aplicados en paredes interiores y en paños de muros externos. Estos últimos, por lo general, han sido los primeros en desaparecer por efecto de su exposición a los elementos naturales, mientras que las escenas en espacios interiores han perdurado hasta nuestros días por condiciones realmente excepcionales.
Este trabajo analiza la inscripción de las orejeras que formaban parte del ajuar funerario del gobernante palencano K’inich Janahb’ Pakal. Propone que los textos de ltales ornamentos se refieren a dos deidades asociadas con la lluvia y el rayo, Chaahk y Yopaat, estrechamente vinculadas entre sí y con el dios K’awiil. Los registros de las dos primeras deidades se relacionan con la identidad ultraterrena de Pakal, ya que al morir éste fue concebido como una encarnación sagrada de K’awiil. El texto también señala que las orejeras fueron tributadas por O’-kan, dignatario originario de una localidad foránea llamada Lah, afiliada políticamente al señorío de Piedras Negras. Tales ornamentos debieron formar parte de un lote mayor de piezas de jadeíta que habrían sido utilizadas para confeccionar otros adornos del atuendo mortuorio de Pakal.
La reconstrucción del pasado prehispánico y colonial de los pueblos mayas tiene múltiples caminos; uno de los poco explorados es la consulta de documentos existentes en archivos nacionales y extranjeros. Fue, precisamente, a1 buscar información inédita sobre los mayas que encontramos en el ramo de Inquisición del Archivo General de la Nación el documento que ahora presentarnos: se trata del legajo titulado: "Autos que remite el Comisario de Campeche contra Juan de la Sosa, natural del puerto de Campeche". El legajo contiene una causa judicial que las autoridades civiles de la Gobernación de Yucatán llevaron a cabo en 1679 contra un criollo: Juan de la Sosa -o Juan de Sosa o de las Sosas, de acuerdo con las diversas formas que muestra el documento-, el cual fue procesado a causa de haber penetrado y permanecido durante varios meses en la zona de las "Las Montañas".
