A Luminescência Opticamente Estimulada (LOE) é uma das técnicas de datação absoluta de sedimentos quaternários baseada em danos causados por radiação em materiais geológicos. A LOE se fundamenta no fato de que parte dessas mudanças não é reversível e aumenta linearmente com o tempo de exposição do mineral à radiação. Na Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, a investigação de sedimentos fluviais permitiu o reconhecimento de capturas fluviais de afluentes do rio Doce por afluentes do rio Paraíba do Sul. Foi realizada a datação absoluta de sedimentos dos vales dos rios São Manuel e Bagres para subsidiar análises cronológicas dos processos de captura. Deste modo, pôde-se discutir as possibilidades e limitações da técnica quando aplicada em depósitos fluviais no Brasil. A LOE continua sendo uma das técnicas de datação absoluta de sedimentos mais utilizada no mundo, apresentando inegáveis contribuições aos trabalhos de reconstituição paleoambiental. Entretanto, a sua aplicação em sedimentos de ambientes tropicais úmidos e com relevo serrano deve ser realizada com cautela, já que sua eficiência pode ser comprometida por processos de coluvionamento e pedogênese.
