Boron nitride nanotubes (BN-NTs) were synthesized by using excimer laser ablation at 1200 °C in different carrier gases. The main characteristic of the BN-NTs produced by this method is that nanotubes are of only one to three atomic layers thick, which could be attributed to the dominance of the axial growth rate over the radial growth rate. The diameter of the BN-NTs ranged from 1.5 to 8 nm. The tips of the BN-NTs are either a flat cap or of polygonal termination, in contrast to the conical ends of carbon nanotubes. The atomic ratio of boron to nitrogen as measured by means of parallel electron energy loss spectroscopy is 0.8, which is within the experimental error of the stoichiometry of hexagonal BN structure.

BackgroundTumourous stem mustard (Brassica juncea var. tumida Tsen et Lee) is an economically and nutritionally important vegetable crop of the Cruciferae family that also provides the raw material for Fuling mustard. The genetics breeding, physiology, biochemistry and classification of mustards have been extensively studied, but little information is available on tumourous stem mustard at the molecular level. To gain greater insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying stem swelling in this vegetable and to provide additional information for molecular research and breeding, we sequenced the transcriptome of tumourous stem mustard at various stem developmental stages and compared it with that of a mutant variety lacking swollen stems.ResultsUsing Illumina short-read technology with a tag-based digital gene expression (DGE) system, we performed de novo transcriptome assembly and gene expression analysis. In our analysis, we assembled genetic information for tumourous stem mustard at various stem developmental stages. In addition, we constructed five DGE libraries, which covered the strains Yong'an and Dayejie at various development stages. Illumina sequencing identified 146,265 unigenes, including 11,245 clusters and 135,020 singletons. The unigenes were subjected to a BLAST search and annotated using the GO and KO databases. We also compared the gene expression profiles of three swollen stem samples with those of two non-swollen stem samples. A total of 1,042 genes with significantly different expression levels occurring simultaneously in the six comparison groups were screened out. Finally, the altered expression levels of a number of randomly selected genes were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR.ConclusionsOur data provide comprehensive gene expression information at the transcriptional level and the first insight into the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and regulatory pathways of stem swelling and development in this plant, and will help define new mechanisms of stem development in non-model plant organisms.

Microstructures of Si nanowires ͑SiNW's͒ synthesized using laser ablation were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The SiNW's have a high density of structural defects, which may play an important role in the formation of SiNW's and in the determination of the morphology of the nanowires. A model for the growth mechanism of the SiNW's was discussed on the basis of the observation.

The complex chromosomal aberrations found in therapy related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) suggest that the DNA double strand break (DSB) response may be altered. In this study we examined the DNA DSB response of primary bone marrow cells from t-AML patients and performed next-generation sequencing of 37 canonical homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) DNA repair genes, and a subset of DNA damage response genes using tumor and paired normal DNA obtained from t-AML patients. Our results suggest that the majority of t-AML patients (11 of 15) have tumor cell-intrinsic, functional dysregulation of their DSB response. Distinct patterns of abnormal DNA damage response in myeloblasts correlated with acquired genetic alterations in TP53 and the presence of inferred chromothripsis. Furthermore, the presence of trisomy 8 in tumor cells was associated with persistently elevated levels of DSBs. Although tumor-acquired point mutations or small indels in canonical HR and NHEJ genes do not appear to be a dominant means by which t-AML leukemogenesis occurs, our functional studies suggest that an abnormal response to DNA damage is a common finding in t-AML.
