Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus are two pathogenetic agents of several infective diseases in humans. Biocidal effects and cellular internalization of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on two bacteria are reported, and ZnO NPs have a good bacteriostasis effect. ZnO NPs were synthesized in the EG aqueous system through the hydrolysis of ionic Zn2+ salts. Particle size and shape were controlled by the addition of the various surfactants. Bactericidal tests were performed in an ordinary broth medium on solid agar plates and in liquid systems with different concentrations of ZnO NPs. The biocidal action of ZnO materials was studied by transmission electron microscopy of bacteria ultrathin sections. The results confirmed that bactericidal cells were damaged after ZnO NPs contacted with them, showing both gram-negative membrane and gram-positive membrane disorganization. The surface modification of ZnO NPs causes an increase in membrane permeability and the cellular internalization of these NPs whereas there is a ZnO NP structure change inside the cells.

In this paper, a hierarchical NiCo2S4@polypyrrole core-shell heterostructure nanotube array on Ni foam (NiCo2S4@PPy/NF) was successfully developed as a bind-free electrode for supercapacitors. NiCo2S4@PPy-50/NF obtained under 50 s PPy electrodeposition shows a low charge-transfer resistance (0.31 Ω) and a high area specific capacitance of 9.781 F/cm(2) at a current density of 5 mA/cm(2), which is two times higher than that of pristine NiCo2S4/NF (4.255 F/cm(2)). Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled using NiCo2S4@PPy-50/NF as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The resulting NiCo2S4@PPy-50/NF//AC device exhibits a high energy density of 34.62 Wh/kg at a power density of 120.19 W/kg with good cycling performance (80.64% of the initial capacitance retention at 50 mA/cm(2) over 2500 cycles). The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the combined contribution of both component and unique core-shell heterostructure. The results demonstrate that the NiCo2S4@PPy-50 core-shell heterostructure nanotube array is promising as electrode material for supercapacitors in energy storage.

Electrically conductive biomaterial scaffolds have great potential in neural tissue regeneration. In this work, an aligned conductive fibrous scaffold was prepared by electrospinning PLLA on rotating collector and chemical oxidation polymerization of pyrrole (PPy) codoped with poly(glutamic acid)/dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid sodium. The characterization results of composition, structure and mechanics of fiber films show that the existence of weak polar van der Waals' force between PPy coating and PLLA fibers. The resistivity of aligned rough PPy-PLLA fiber film (about 800 nm of fiber diameter) at the perpendicular and parallel directions is 0.971 and 0.874 Ω m, respectively. Aligned rough PPy-PLLA fiber film could guide the extension of 68% PC12 neurites along the direction of fiber axis. Under electrostimulation (ES) of 100, 200, and 400 mV/cm, median neurite lengths of differentiated PC12 on aligned fiber-films are 128, 149, and 141 μm, respectively. Furthermore, under ES of 100, 200, and 400 mV/cm, the alignment rate of neurite along the electropotential direction (angle between neurite and electropotential direction ≤10°) on random fibers film are 17, 23, and 28%, respectively, and the alignment rate of neurites along the fiber axis (angle between neurite and fiber axis ≤10°) on aligned fibers film reach to 76, 83, and 79%, respectively, indicating that the combination of ES and rough conducting aligned structure could adjust the alignment of cellular neurites along the direction of the fiber axis or electropotential.

Angiogenesis, a complex biologic process, is regulated by a large number of angiogenic factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2). Whether Bone morphogenetic proteins-2 (BMP-2), the osteoinductive factor, could significantly reinforce the effect of VEGF and FGF-2 on angiogenesis has not been studied in detail. To study the positive effects of multiple growth factors on angiogenesis, HUVECs were treated with BMP-2, VEGF, or FGF-2 singly and in binary and ternary combinations. This study further investigates the optimal timing of the ternary combination of BMP-2, VEGF and FGF-2 for angiogenesis in the chorioallantoic membrane (FGF-2 CAM). Results of single applications of BMP-2, VEGF, or FGF-2 suggested that HUVECs angiogenesis could be promoted in a dose-dependent manner and that the optimal concentration of BMP, VEGF and FGF-2 was 10, 50 and 1 ng/mL, respectively. These results indicated that the angiogenic activity of VEGF and FGF-2 was amplified by combining with BMP-2. The ternary combination of BMP-2, VEGF and FGF-2 exhibited a positive and synergistic effect on HUVECs angiogenesis, with the lower concentrations of each factor (1 ng/mL of BMP-2, 25 ng/mL of VEGF and 0.1 ng/mL of FGF-2) being sufficient to show synergistic promotion. When VEGF and FGF-2 were added in the initial activation stage and BMP-2 was added in the maturation stage, both HUVECs angiogenesis in vitro and CAM angiogenesis in vivo could be enhanced more effectively. These results could provide a basis for the controlled release systems capable of delivering multiple factors sequentially to promote angiogenesis in tissue engineering.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were treated with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) dose-dependently and time-dependently. Together they caused a strong synergistic effect on the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs, with lower concentrations of each factor being enough to show the synergistic promotion (50 ng BMP-2/ml, 1 ng VEGF/ml and 10 ng bFGF/ml). When both VEGF and bFGF were added in the early proliferating stage (the first 7 days) and BMP-2 was added in the late differentiation stage (the last 7 days), osteogenic differentiation of MSCs could be enhanced more effectively.
