Demokratie und Autorität stehen in einem Spannungsverhältnis: Als eine asymmetrische, auf Zuerkennung von Überlegenheit beruhende Anerkennungsbeziehung verstanden, läuft Autorität sowohl dem Anspruch auf Gleichheit als auch dem demokratischen Prinzip der Kritik zuwider. Wie anhand von Hannah Arendts Revitalisierung der römischen auctoritas-potestas-Unterscheidung in ihrer Konzeption der republikanischen Demokratie gezeigt werden soll, sind mit Autorität jedoch bestimmte ordnungspolitische Leistungen für die Demokratie verbunden. Um diese Leistungen erfassen zu können, wird im Anschluss an Arendt eine begriffstheoretische Schärfung des zwischen legitimer Herrschaft und kommunikativer Macht stehenden Autoritätskonzepts vorgeschlagen.
