The Problem. Persons with disabilities (PWD) are regarded as "the Other" and are sequestered from "normative" society because of their "Otherness." "Othering" results in discrimination and the systemic preclusion of PWD. Ableism is the belief that being without a disability, impairment, or chronic illness is the norm. The notion that people without disabilities are the norm and are inherently superior is accepted without critique by those that advocate for authentic leadership. This privileges ableism and furthers the "Othering" of PWD within a leadership style intended to promote self-awareness, beliefs and ethics, and interpersonal relationships. The Solution. The disabled experience and differently abled voice must be restored through relationally "being" with others and authentic dialogue. What is needed is a shift from the deficit model of authentic leadership to a social paradigm of authentic leadership, welcoming of bodily and psychic difference. This will better enable both leaders and employees to craft an authentic profile in the workplace. The Stakeholders. Leaders and those who seek to become leaders following an authentic leadership approach can benefit from a better understanding of how their ingrained belief systems impact those that they lead who are both "ablebodied" and "disabled." Human resource development (HRD) practitioners and leadership development practitioners can use this information to deconstruct and reconstruct leadership development opportunities to be inclusive as an authentic leader.

This literature review engages mental illness in adult education (AE) to locate what research exists and to suggest a research agenda moving forward. This structured review located research related to mental health issues published in the conference proceedings of the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE) and the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) and fourteen international AE journals. AE scholarship focused on identity construction, andragogy and classroom issues, public pedagogy, popular education and arts‐based education, contesting psychiatric knowledge and sanism, and workplace.

This structured literature review explores disability issues in human resource development (HRD) to ascertain what research exists and suggest future research. This review identifies the work related to disability issues published in the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) proceedings and the four journals. HRD scholarship, germane to our discussion of disability, has focused on organizational entry barriers, organizational post-entry barriers, career development (CD) and advancement, workplace training for disability inclusiveness, workplace training for disabled employees, and harassment, discrimination, and allegations of discharge-related discrimination.

This article is an autoethnographic vignette of a schizoaffective sufferer learning about ‘saneness’ from slasher films. In this paper, theories from popular culture as pedagogy, Mad Studies, and cultivation theory, are used to confirm that saneness in motion pictures (specifically slasher films) can be conceptualized as a site of critical pedagogy. In addition, this paper relates the ways in which sane performativity in slasher films is consumable and made educative by inducting a new notion into adult education and Mad Studies: the pedagogy of saneness. This paper concludes that in order for viewers to steady their shattered psyches they have to learn to live with their ‘abnormality’ rather than shirk it into oblivion.
