El conocimiento de la sistemática de Bursera es aún manifiestamente incompleto. En el presente trabajo se ofrece una lista comentada de 82 especies mexicanas de este género que ameritan al menos un reconocimiento provisional, indicando para cada una la distribución geográfica conocida por estados de la República. Con base en esta información se elabora un mapa y un cuadro de diversidad de los representantes de Bursera en las 32 entidades administrativas del país. Guerrero registra 48 especies, seguido por Michoacán y Oaxaca con 37, así como por Jalisco y Puebla con 28 respectivamente. En Tlaxcala no se ha encontrado ninguna, mientras que Nuevo León, Tabasco y Quintana Roo albergan sólo una cada uno. Se integra asimismo una lista de 33 especies mexicanas de Bursera (40.3% del total) de distribución restringida, 10 de las cuales se registran únicamente de la localidad tipo y áreas aledañas, 10 adicionales se conocen aparentemente de un solo estado y otras 13 no se extienden más allá del territorio de dos estados contiguos. Con fundamento en estos datos se definen seis áreas de concentración de especies endémicas del género, ubicándolas en el mapa respectivo.
Se integra una enumeración de 749 géneros de fanerógamas que contienen al menos una especie que habita exclusiva o preferentemente en el bosque tropical caducifolio (btc) de México. Tal lista indica que la familia Leguminosae es la mejor representada en este tipo de vegetación; le siguen en importancia las Compositae y Gramineae y en seguida Malvaceae, Orchidaceae y Apocynaceae. La composición florística del btc de nuestro país con frecuencia discrepa mucho de una localidad a otra. De acuerdo con lo encontrado en la literatura, al menos 96 géneros de árboles se registran con especies dominantes o cuantitativamente importantes en los censos realizados en diferentes partes del país. Las afinidades geográficas de la flora del btc indican estrechos vínculos con las de Centro y Sudamérica. De acuerdo con este inventario, 7.9% de los géneros son endémicos a los límites políticos de la República y esta cifra sube a 19.2% si se toma como referencia también a Centroamérica. La existencia del btc en México data al menos desde Cenozoico Temprano y su flora actual, sin menoscabo de haberse nutrido mediante intercambios de fuentes diversas, es primordialmente el resultado de largos e intensos procesos evolutivos realizados en su propio seno.
Se describe como nuevo e ilustra a Perymenium rogmacvaughii con base en un ejemplar colectado en el extremo occidental del Estado de México. La especie está posiblemente relacionada con P. hintonii McVaugh, conocido de Michoacán, y con P. pringlei B.L. Rob. & Greenm. var pringlei, registrado de Jalisco y Sinaloa.
Bursera cinerea, especie descrita hace más de una centuria, quedó practicamente ignorada por los botánicos del siglo XX. Exploraciones recientes realizadas en la porción central de Veracruz (México) indican que este árbol debe haber sido uno de los componentes importantes del bosque tropical caducifolio que en otros tiempos cubría amplias extensiones y todavía hoy forma parte de los vestigios del mismo. B. cinerea es muy similar a B. simaruba (L.) Sarg., de la que difiere primordialmente en las hojas con menor número de foliolos y en los frutos más pequeños.
