antes de emprender un viaje, es costumbre ch'allar el camino con alcohol puro, coca y la fórmula: "Tahaki mallku, Tahaki t'alla, suma iripitanta". Como decir, más o menos: "Señor camino, señora camino, me vas a llevar bien". Con lo cual, ese camino físico y real que se está ch'allando pasa a ser concebido como el prototipo de los caminos, entidad viva con la que verdaderamente el hombre está tratando. (Martínez 1976: 272) Cuando los españoles llegaron al mundo andino, uno de los aspectos que particularmente les asombró fue la relación que las sociedades locales establecían con el espacio y sus elementos físicos. Los cronistas las describieron como gentes que adoraban la tierra, las piedras, los animales, los cerros, los volcanes, los manantiales, un cruce de caminos o ciertos lugares con connotaciones específicas. Más que la imposición de un dios por otro, la conquista efectiva se enfrentaba a la transformación, obstinada y de largo aliento, de un imaginario social donde las divinidades eran múltiples y los elementos del espacio, su principal adoración. Se hizo entonces necesario identificar, instruir y extirpar aquellas deidades consideradas paganas por los dogmas de la doctrina católica. Se elaboraron listados de huacas y de lugares sagrados que variaban de región en región (véase p. e., Duviols 1986; Castro 2009). Tal fue el caso, por ejemplo, de la Instrucción para descubrir todas las guacas del Pirú y sus camayos y haziendas, atribuida al párroco Cristóbal de Albornoz, quien la habría escrito a finales del siglo xvi (Albornoz 1989 Desde una mirada regional analizamos las prácticas rituales del tráfico a partir de un conjunto de sitios arquitectónicos de carácter ceremonial que identificamos en asociación a rutas prehispánicas en el desierto de Atacama. Se reconoce una sugerente variedad de prácticas rituales que se distribuyen diferenciadamente, observándose que ciertas manifestaciones fueron compartidas a nivel panandino y circumpuneño, mientras que otras aluden a rituales exclusivos del desierto atacameño. Con la integración de información etnohistórica y etnográfica realizamos una interpretación de los datos arqueológicos con relación a la estructuración socioespacial preinkaica, significados simbólicos y, especialmente, sobre las ofrendas como representativas del tráfico e intercambio interregional.Palabras clave: arquitectura ceremonial, tráfico, Período Intermedio Tardío, desierto de AtacamaThe paper analyzes ritual practices in regional traffic, based on a set of ceremonial archaeological sites identified in association with pre-Hispanic routes of the Atacama Desert.
