Bu çalışmada Elazığ İli'nin yaklaşık 12 km güneyinde Ballıca Köyü civarında denizel ortamda çökelmiş olan Orta Eosen-Oligosen yaşlı Kırkgeçit Formasyonu'nun ince taneli sedimanlarından alınan örneklerin jeokimyasal özellikleri belirlenmiş, böylece kaynak alandaki ayrışma derecesi, kaynak kayanın bileşimi ve tektonik özelliklerinin ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır. Ballıca civarında Kırkgeçit Formasyonu yer yer çok ince taneli kumtaşları ardalanmasından oluşan karbonatca zengin boz-gri renkli çamurtaşlarından oluşmaktadır. Log (SiO2/Al2O3)'e karşı log (Fe2O3/K2O) oranına göre örnekler Fe'ce zengin şeyl alanına düşmektedir. Ortalama kimyasal alterasyon indeksi (CIA) ve kimyasal ayrışma indeksi (CIW) değerlerine göre bu sedimanların orta dereceli alterasyona uğradığı tespit edilmiştir. Kondrit normalize diyagramlarda Ballıca örnekleri bileşimi çevre kayaçlardan Elazığ Magmatitleri'ne yakın değerler sunmuştur. Ballıca örnekleri bileşiminin Post Avusturalya Arkeen Şeyllerin'den (PAAS) farklı olması bunların nötr, bazik karakter sunduğunu göstermektedir. Eu/Eu*-Th/Sc oranlarına göre Kırkgeçit sedimanlarını besleyen kaynak kayaçlar bazik karakterlidir. Th/Co-La/Sc diyagramında örnekler bazik kayaçlarlarla silisik kayaçlar arasında yer almaktadır. LaTh -Sc üçgen diyagramı da örneklerin bileşiminin PAAS ve granitten farklı ve andezit ve bazalt aralığında olduğunu göstermiştir. La-Sc-Th, Th-Sc-Zr/10 diyagramlarına göre örneklerin bileşimi okyanusal ada yayı alanına düşmektedir.
