Este artigo apresenta uma análise sobre a forma como a extensão universitária foi apresentada na legislação federal, a partir do Estatuto das Universidades (1931) – o qual instituiu o regime universitário no Ensino Superior no Brasil – até a previsão de curricularização das atividades de extensão, previstas nos Planos Nacionais de Educação (2001-2010; 2014-2024), e regulamentada pela Resolução CNE nº 7/2018. Este estudo é o resultado de uma pesquisa documental e historiográfica, a partir dos pressupostos da História Social, principalmente do conceito da longa duração da história. Para a análise dos diferentes tipos de normativas, foi utilizada a análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin, em que foram elencadas como palavras-chave na leitura dos documentos: extensão, extensão-ensino, extensão-pesquisa, ensino, pesquisa e ensino-pesquisa-extensão. Como principais resultados, destacamos: a) as diversas extensões apresentadas na legislação federal; b) o papel da Constituição Federal de 1988, ao instituir a extensão como indissociável do ensino e da pesquisa nas universidades; e c) a Resolução CNE n° 7/2018, como um marco para a extensão universitária.
